JON HASSELL
Hamburg 1985 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Fabrik, Hamburg, Germany; May 15, 1985. Very good FM broadcast. Emperor Nobody remaster.

American trumpet player and composer Jon Hassell is known for developing the musical concept known as “Fourth World,” which sees him unify ideas from minimalism, various world music sources, and his electronic manipulation of the trumpet. He has collaborated with artists such as Brian Eno, the Theatre of Eternal Music, Talking Heads, Farafina, Peter Gabriel, Ani DiFranco, and Ry Cooder.

Thanks to KINEBEE; FBAUER; and to Emperor Nobody for sharing the show at Dime.

Emperor Nobody’s remaster notes (March 2018):

I noticed Maestro and Fourth World traveller Jon Hassell was turning 71 on [March] 22nd - I think I finally understand why he called his first LP “Vernal Equinox” - so I pulled out this monster 78 minutes of ambient trance marathon and dusted it down for maximum audioliciousness. I did a whole bunch of high end repair at first, but then scrapped those modifications (too much) and dialed what I had been doing back a bunch using the usual tools, that is, Sound Forge 11 EQ and Graphic Dynamics adjustments. No NR was used. I removed a whole bunch of bursts of FM noise, smoothed the disorienting and sudden transition from the first track into the second, and adjusted the latter very subtly to make it volume-consistent with the rest, which I felt it was not. No other changes were made, but I modified the (really cool IMO) artwork a little bit to reflect that it’s been remastered and listed the tracks on the back artwork, which lacked them. New tags, titles, fingerprints and some remaster notes later, here it is for your pleasure. Enjoy and happy b’day Jon Hassell, then! And many more!

possibly a master or 1st gen off-air FM reel, remastered by EN
DIME seed FLACs from (originally) KINEBEE & (then retracked by) FBAUER, who are both awesome > WAV > Sound Forge 11 remasterizzations > FLAC 8

  2. Fantastic Big O thank you so much for this. Big fan of Hassell since ‘Possible Musics’ Brian Eno collaboration and vaunting from Brian is entirely justified. A master
    Thank you! :)
