INSTANT COMPOSERS POOL (ICP)
Southampton 2017 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Turner Sims, Southampton, UK; October 31, 2017. Very good BBC Radio 3.

The Instant Composers Pool (ICP) is an internationally renowned collective of Dutch composer-improviser-instrumentalists formed in 1967 by Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Willem Breuker. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with many giants of the experimental music world. Mengelberg passed away in March 2017 at 81; and their current lineup consists of 10 of the most innovative musical voices from around the globe, including ICP co-founder Han Bennink, one of the most in-demand drummers in Europe. The exact programme is always a surprise, as the band decides just a few minutes before the performance what they will be playing. From ragtime to swing, bop to free jazz, classical to carnival, the ICP Orchestra continues to be at the forefront of experimental music. Nothing else sounds quite like them and no two gigs are ever alike.

In the autumn of 2017 the band toured the UK and Soweto Kinch catches up with them for a concert set from Turner Sims in Southampton.

  2. One of the great bands of our time. Misha may be gone but the spirit still lives on with these folks and his originals are still worth exploring. And Bennink always makes them swing, even armed with just a snare drum. Thanks Big O. (Wow! Wyatt and ICP on the same day!)

  3. Total rubbish and as usual ( baring a few exceptions) definitely not Jazz.

By Smashmouth on Apr 23, 2018

  4. This definitely does not have my approval.

By Smashmouth on Apr 23, 2018

  5. Always trying to claim intelligence, yet doesn’t understand simple grammar or spelling-its embarrassing and funny at the same time.

By Eiffel Stranger on Apr 23, 2018

  6. I’m not a jazz guy per say, but to me this sounds reminiscent of fifties/ sixties jazz . Maybe I’m missing something.

By Bill on Apr 23, 2018

  7. I love the horns on this .

By Bill on Apr 23, 2018

  8. What you’re missing Bill is that ever since big o admonished you and listed your screen names, everyone knows {if they didn’t already} that you’re Smash, Derrick, Jonah etc etc. I can certainly re-post big o’s list for you if you’re confused.

By Eiffel Stranger on Apr 23, 2018

  9. Would you shut up Eiffel or whoever you are this week . Nobody wants or needs your opinions. Even when things are normal here (Normal Comments) you have to try to stir up shit . Opinions are like assholes ‘ everybody’s got one . The only thing your doing is increasing the troll fest . When you leave a comment you know it’ll get a response. That’s why you do it . Your a troll just like the others .

By Terrence on Apr 24, 2018

  10. Wasting your words . Rod eeer Moron is like an addict addicted to his keyboard.

By Eli on Apr 24, 2018

  11. David/Paul Stewart/Bill/Frank/Stanley/Derrick/Antonio and whatever names you use. Of course, you do not want to see the point. If not for Cloudflare we would have been innudated with more of your nonsense.

  12. King Fisher/CJ/Smashmouth/Derrick/CC Ryder/George/Bill/Stanley, etc: Stop playing the victim and stop trolling and muddying the site with your multiple names.

  13. That’s probably you Eiffel pretending to be big o

By CJ on Apr 25, 2018

  14. Not that it really matters on way or another. Jesus are there that many people that don’t have lives ?

By CJ on Apr 25, 2018

  15. Love it Rod errr Moron how about a balls on chins comment ? Are you running it of clever takes ?

By Eli on Apr 25, 2018

  16. Two years of balls on chins . Guess the new ideas are drying up .

By Eli on Apr 25, 2018

  17. Did someone mention balls on chins ? Yum Yum

By Groupie Chick Traci on Apr 25, 2018

  18. You just refuse to get it-not playing a back and forth game with you, not trying to “win”, just want you to stop trolling big o every day of the week. Big o has asked you several times to stop, as have I and many others; go do something else for a while, maybe even actually listen to some music.

By Eiffel Stranger on Apr 26, 2018

  19. So Eiffel , what’s your opinion on this post ? All you seem to do is troll and comment on other trolls . Do you even have an opinion on music ?

By CJ on Apr 26, 2018

  20. Naw cj Rod never talks music . He just likes stirring up shit . He probably talks music under another username.

By Eli on Apr 26, 2018

  21. If trolls are a problem ” simply moderate all comments or do away with them completely. When there is no moderator trolls are free to roam . If they choose the status quo then quit complaining.

By Freddie Fender on Apr 26, 2018

  22. Actually the stuff that goes on here is quite tame compared to other sites ‘ especially the political ones .

By Freddie Fender on Apr 26, 2018

  23. Eli, Freddie Fender, CJ, Groupie Chick Traci, Derrick, U L E, Terrence, Bill, Smashmouth - You’ve really gone rabid repeating and talking to yourself. When you are treated like an adult, you ask for supervision/moderation! The word is self-restraint. Isn’t it obvious why you are not at other sites? They’ve have long banned you.

    By bigozine2 on Apr 26, 2018

  24. Well what do you know, called out by big o AGAIN.

By Eiffel Stranger on Apr 28, 2018

  25. Very interesting and a dead giveaway . A big o comment followed by another Eiffel ( the designated troll ) post . Right on cue . Nice Rod / Eiffel / Left Jam / Jones Brigade / Doc Doom and many more . Rod errrr Moron you really have lost your touch or your balls on chins ideas have really dried up .

By Eli on Apr 28, 2018

  26. My comment was left 2 days after big o’s you stupid ass.

By Eiffel Stranger on Apr 29, 2018

  27. Eli- these nuts haven’t lost their touch on your chin.

These nuts are right on cue right on your chin.

These nuts are also on Freddie Fender, CJ, Groupie Chick Traci, Derrick, U L E, Terrence, Bill, and Smashmouth’s chins.

    Moron.

By Eli Moron on Apr 29, 2018

  28. Way to go Rod / Eiffel / Left Jammer / Doc Doom / Jones Brigade errrr Moron . I knew you still had it in you . Thank me for the inspiration . And please quit denying that these identies aren’t all you .

By Eli on Apr 29, 2018

  29. Hypocrite

By Eli on Apr 29, 2018

  30. Track 12 is not “Humming Song” or “Spinning Song” — it’s actually Duke Ellington’s “The Mooche.”
