Santa Monica 2018 [no label, 1CD]

Morning Becomes Eclectic. KCRW FM. Santa Monica, CA; January 11, 2018. Very good audio (ripped from HDTV webcast). Hosted by Jason Bentley.

Khruangbin is an American musical trio from Houston, Texas, with Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Ray “DJ” Johnson Jr on drums. The band is known for blending global music influences, classic soul, dub and psychedelia. Their debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You (2014), draws from the history of Thai music in the 1960s, while their second album, Con Todo El Mundo (2018), also has influences from Spain and the Middle East. Speer and Lee also DJ under the Khruangbin name, hosting “Air Khruang” radio shows on NTS and Facebook Live. [Khruangbin means “flying engine” or “aeroplane” in Thai.]

Khruangbin first turned heads in 2014 with the video for their song “A Calf Born in Winter,” which Bonobo featured on his Late Night Tales mix and eventually led to a record deal from label subsidiary Night Time Stories. They recorded their debut full-lenth, The Universe Smiles Upon You, in the countryside barn where they held their first rehearsals, and the band still refers to that space and their long drives across the pastoral East Texas landscape as their “spiritual home.”

  4. I checked out Tracks 3, 6, and 7, and can only wonder when was the real music supposed to start? Reminds me of the time I was slipped heroin instead of coke and after a quick snort and vomit I spent 7 hours feeling like I was on the verge of an orgasm that never came. HORRIBLE!!!

Sounds like The Emperor’s New Clothes.
