MIKE NESMITH R.I.P. 1942 - 2021

Michael Nesmith, who achieved global fame as a member of the pop group the Monkees, has died on December 10 aged 78. “With infinite love we announce that Michael Nesmith has passed away this morning in his home, surrounded by family, peacefully and of natural causes,” his family said in a statement. “We ask that you respect our privacy at this time and we thank you for the love and light that all of you have shown him and us.”

Nesmith was the group’s guitarist, and also one of its songwriters, for tracks including The Girl I Knew Somewhere, Listen to the Band and Mary, Mary. With Nesmith alongside Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones and Peter Tork, the Monkees had huge hits including US chart-toppers Daydream Believer and I’m a Believer, having been formed for a TV sitcom about a rock’n’roll band. Nesmith successfully auditioned for the role of “Mike” in the show, in October 1965, having begun his music career as a jobbing folk music performer in Los Angeles. Davy Jones died in 2012; while Peter Tork passed away in 2019. -

The Mike & Micky Show
Denver 2018 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Paramount Theater, Denver, CO; June 12, 2018. Fairly to very good audience recording.

Thanks to in_halen for sharing the show at Dime.

in_halen noted:

This is one of my better recordings - we were seated dead center in the 14th row, with the two rows in front of us largely empty. Of course, our row was completely full and the gentleman seated next to me was approximately 30 per cent too large for the seat, but, I guess we made it work!

This was the second concert in a row for us, having seen Yes the previous night at the same venue, but, I was really excited to see this show. I’ve followed The Monkees since that February 1986 MTV marathon and this was the 7th time I’ve seen them (having see the ‘86, ‘87, ‘89, ‘01, ‘11 and ‘13 tours).

Nesmith and Dolenz are both in their mid-70s, but, they both sang well and what the show lacked in energy was more than compensated by the intimate nature of the performances. Nesmith remarks after singing ‘Nine Times Blue’ that the song always chokes him up, but, my wife was in tears during ‘Me and Magdalena’ and ‘Daydream Believer.’

Six years later, Davy’s death still hangs like a pall over the group, so, in a way, the performances having become increasingly melancholy (with the inclusion of so much of Nesmith’s work) - yet, Mike was mugging like he was still a twenty-something acting on a TV show. Peter Tork’s role in the group was acknowledged by the performance of his original ‘For Pete’s Sake’, which also served as the closing theme on the TV show’s second season.

I read that the venue seats 1870, but, I’d guess it was half full. It’s too bad, because this setlist - in some ways, a dream setlist for a hardcore Monkees fan such as myself - really shows the depth of their catalog. Underappreciated in their time as a band and denigrated by Dolenz and Nesmith themselves as nothing more than characters on a TV show, The Monkees music holds up in a way no way could have possibly predicted, including the guys still carrying the flag. If rock ‘n’ roll is going to have a hall of fame - and I doubt that it needs one, but, nonetheless - The Monkees deserve to be in it.

Finally: please don’t sell the recording, but, otherwise, do with it what you wish. Share it and trade it, and remember: these and other greats will not be around forever, so, let’s enjoy them while we have them. Best wishes to all of the fans out there and Namaste.

  3. Isn’t there even something from the 80s out there ? At least they wernt completely old farts by then ‘ plus Davy was still alive

By Pat Grooms on Aug 2, 2018

  4. What’s. next Mark Lindsey or Bobby Sherman in their 70s

By Pat Grooms on Aug 2, 2018

  5. Pat- Here’s an idea: If you don’t want to listen to something posted, why not just skip over it? Or do you think you are proving your “excellent taste” in music by whining about what you don’t like? Come to think of it, if you hate this much stuff why not start your own site- then you can post whatever you want and deal with other people giving you shit about it.

  6. Cmon man ‘ this is awful . You can’t possibly think this is good . These guys were great back in the day . But that was the 60s . That’s fifty years ago . Get real

By Pat Grooms on Aug 2, 2018

  7. Mike Nesmith is filthy rich . I read that he inherited a fortune . He especially dosent need cash . Plus he was actually a talented singer songwriter back in the day even after the monkees.

  8. Monkees’ Michael Nesmith Recovering From Quadruple Bypass Heart Surgery

By sking on Aug 2, 2018

  9. Yeah ‘ that is very sad . A real bummer . But it just goes to show that these guys shouldn’t be out performing on stage at their ages . They should all be taking it easy .

By Pat Grooms on Aug 2, 2018

  10. I read that Mike Nesmith is 75 . That is old .

By LC on Aug 2, 2018

  11. One of the nice things about BigO is that one can download as little or as much as one likes to check how the show/music sounds. In this case, I grabbed 5 tracks for auditioning… I will admit that the band play really well but the vocals, especially Micky’s are pretty pitiful and its kinda sad hearing this.

Sad also about Mike’s recent health issues… I read his book recently and he’s a bit of a conundrum and I’m just as baffled as many others as to why he decided to do this tour. In some ways I can understand why the show goes on, but I think The Monkees died with Davy Jones.

By Bruce Skywater on Aug 2, 2018

  12. I agree , Davy was irreplaceable. Also Mike was very well respected in the Gram Parsons mold in the seventies although he never had commercial success. Actually I loved Mickys voice when he was young and he sang lead on most of the biggest hits including I’m a believer . It is sad to realize that everyone gets old .

By Bill on Aug 2, 2018

  13. The comments and description by in_halen are spot-on. I enjoyed listening to this. I think their voices are pretty good for guys in their 70’s, and it is upbeat, and clean. Thanks!

Of the 11 comments so far, 6 of them (and maybe some of the other names) were written by one person “Pat Grooms” who apparently is obsessed against older performers and their fans reminiscing and enjoying favorite classic songs.

By Roger Hendricks on Aug 2, 2018

  14. I’m not Pat “ Pats not me . Is it so hard to believe that people can share unpopular opinions ?

By LC on Aug 3, 2018

  15. All I said was that 75 is old . It’s sad to me to listen to older artists when you have memories of them when they were young . This is not very good sad to say . Like the earlier statement said ‘ the band is very good but the boys can’t sing anymore.

By LC on Aug 3, 2018

  16. I’m certainly not Pat either. Rare I ever comment here and when I do, I do try to be constructive and deal with the show in question. I agree with LC’s sentiment about it feeling sad hearing our heroes and idols succumb to the ravages of age. Musically, this band play superbly, but the aged vocals really let it down. Kudos to them for doing deeper cuts like St Matthew but one wishes they’d done so back in the mid 90’s when the four of them reformed for the shortlived Justus era.

By Bruce Skywater on Aug 3, 2018

  17. What a killer setlist: The Door Into Summer, The Girl I Knew Somewhere, Goin’ Down… hey Mike, I guess all these years you were wrong about the Monkee’s music being crap. Cognitive dissonance.

By buster on Aug 4, 2018

  18. You know what Paul McCartney is the same age as the Monkees and he could smash any of the younger bands. Pat Goons is an asshole. Most of these songs have never been performed live before and that is great to hear them. Right now Mike is confused as to weather he is William Shatner or not and is over performing his songs and enunciating poorly, JUST SING MIKE. But all in all I’d rather listen to this than the shit Pat Goons listens to, mis-spelling intentional.

  19. Where’s Willis these days ? Thought he’d be on cloud 9 with this post . After all he thinks the monkees were better than Hendrix .

By Carl on Aug 4, 2018

  20. OK, I love the Monkees but there is no one better then Hendrix….Slash comes damn close….

Some of the biggest I’ve seen have been on short guys , and some of the smallest on tall dudes . I once screwed a guy who was 6 foot 6 who only had 5 inches and he was skinny around too . A pencil prick .
