Stockholm 1974 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden; May 14, 1974. Very good soundboard.

Lou Reed passed away on October 27, 2013 from liver disease. He was 71.

By the end of 1973, the twin guitarists of Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner had left the Lou Reed band. The band that left for Europe in 1974 was to support the new album, Sally Can’t Dance [finally released in September 1974] but RCA had just released Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal in February of 1974, a live account of the previous year’s Dec 21 show in New York.

In Europe, the setlist was expected to be heavy with songs from Berlin, Walk On The Wild Side and VU favorites, basically the Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal setlist. This show is the first from the European tour and was broadcast live on FM radio. The early vinyl bootleg of this concert was titled Whatever Happened To Dick And Steve? with reference to the missing guitarists.

With Dick and Steve gone, Reed’s music took a less aggressive attitude. It was more rhythm with some fancy soloing. More play than punishment. But Reed maintained a ghostly visage with hair cropped close to the skull and the makeup of a walking corpse. He wore black leather, a studded collar and lived with a transvestite.

Sally Can’t Dance in retrospect sounds like a punk’s last hurrah. When pushed to follow up the Top 10 success of Sally, Reed forced his record company to release the double LP noise wank/yawn Metal Machine Music that guaranteed Reed’s legend as an infant terrible. After which, Reed grew up and changed tack.

While others like Dylan were trying to be heavy by 1974, Lou Reed wanted to be taken seriously. It wasn’t until 1978’s Street Hassle that his singer-songwriter credentials held firm.

Thanks to mdshrk1; and to theface07 for sharing the show at The Traders’ Den.

Original notes:

This copy here is at the correct speed and is combined from three different sources with numerous minor flaws seamlessly repaired. THANKS to all of the many seeders of this excellent show!!

Other notes: The Swedish state radio company gave Lou and his new live band studio time for rehearsals and then the first show of the tour at the Concerthouse in Stockholm was recorded for FM brodcast for the
radioshow “Tonkraft”.

When this basic source before the final fixes was previously seeded, Sister Ray was cut by a few minutes so that the show could fit on a single CD. Sister Ray has been restored here to its full length from an alternate reel source. I burned this with just the encore on a second disc, but the show can be split elsewhere or left as the full show on a hard disk if desired (the disc transition is seamless).

1. 2 track second generation pre-broadcast reel recorded at 7.5 ips speed [up to I’m Waiting For The Man].
2. Vinyl Bootleg “What Ever Happened To Dick & Steve” [for the rest of the show up until the cut in Sister Ray].
3. 4 track second (or possibly third) generation pre-broadcast reel recorded at 7.5 ips speed [seamlessly merged from the cut in Sister Ray to the end of the show].

Transfer/Editing Notes:

This recording contains a very well known performance from Stockholm in 1974 by Lou Reed that has circulated for many years. This particular version, is taken from the upgraded version that was compiled from three seperate sources to produce the most complete and accurate version of this performance to date. As mentioned in the source details, the speed was corrected and the recording was restored to its most complete length including the final track Sister Ray in its entirety.

Although this source is guaranteed lossless, it is not without its flaws. Notably, the overall sound of the recording, which does fluctuate with the three seperate sources utilized, is quite boomy and lacking in proper frequency balance. Therefore, my remastering was mostly limited to balancing the frequency spectrum by taming the low end and bringing out more clarity in the higher frequencies. I believe it now sounds much closer to what was intended in the original recording.

Another adjustment I made, which was very simple, was to add the 12 second 11th track to the end of track 12. I found it pointless to have a separate track just for a bit of stage dialogue and crowd noise.

I have also included altered artwork from the “Waiting For Lou” commercial bootleg, with the proper tracklisting. Hopefully this is considered an improvement upon the source material and fans of Lou Reed get some enjoyment out of it. - theface07

Lewis Allan Reed was born on March 2, 1942 at Beth El Hospital (now Brookdale) in Brooklyn and grew up in Freeport, Long Island.[1][nb 1] Reed was the son of Toby (née Futterman) (1920–2013) and Sidney Joseph Reed (1913–2005), an accountant.[3] His family was Jewish;[4] his father had changed his name from Rabinowitz to Reed.[5] Reed said that although he was Jewish, his real god was rock ‘n’ roll.[6][7]

  22. Re the infantile postings about cocks and stuff: Let’s face it, these people are mentally challenged overweight forty-something virgins living with their moms. If they are not posting here they will only be shouting at folk on trains or howling at the moon, so this site provides an outlet for their mental troubles. We all know they need our pity and we’re adult enough to ignore them and not engage with them. Those who do respond are equally disabled. So just let them have their fun; we’re providing a support service by keeping them away from wider society.
