Seattle 1969 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the
Eagles Auditorium, Seattle, WA; November 8, 1969. Fairly to very good FM broadcast. Mk3 version, carefully remastered fixing various issues, WITH EQ & NR. Bonus: James Gang - Kent State University, Kent, Portage County, Ohio; possibly September 19, 1968. Fairly to very good FM.

Thanks to kneesfudd for sharing the Country Joe show at Dime.

kneesfudd noted:

- Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Some hiss, mostly L channel. A few broadcast edit fast fade-ins. #07 intro has station ID. #10 bad hiss @start from low levels. #13 bad cut @8mins (15+secs missing) & omitted few secs more for almost seamless splice.
- The original “Mk1″ 2010 & “Mk2″ 2017 uploads were labeled M1, but actually were M2 from an off-air source.
- Sometimes circulated as 1969-11-01 & 1969-11-07 but now definitively dated by DIMER gv0000 as 1969-11-08.
- Country Joe & The Fish played Seattle Eagles Auditorium on November 7 & 8, 1969.
- Likely the full set, not sure. Probably the few edits were to omit AUD noise & tuning for broadcast.
- “Here We Are Again” recorded Jan-Mar ‘69 & issued July ‘69, but NO songs from it are played here.
- Six of 11 songs here from “C.J. Fish” LP which was recorded Jan ‘70 & issued May ‘70, seven months after this show.
- The audience was unfamiliar with a lot of the material played at this gig.
- Where are the master tapes for these gigs? Not the off-air tapes but the station tapes. Unlikely they got trashed.

unknown equipment miked over the stage > master stereo reel > ? (1st? generation broadcast edit) > post-concert stereo FM broadcast > unknown equipment > off-air master (reel?) > 1st generation tape (probably reel) > 2nd generation cassette without Dolby > Nakamichi CR7E (2004) > Marantz DR700 > CD-R > EAC > wav (16/44.1) > flacs. (While 2nd gen from the off-air master it’s actually at least a 4th gen analog tape, plus issues of radio compression).

Remastering 2018-08-xx: 2nd generation FM flacs > TLH > Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, extreme channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, song transitions cleaned up, Clip Fix applied to R channel for 14mins in #12 & 13 to restore clipping from oversaturation, 59Hz notch filter applied to entire tape, plus more notch filters on #10, pitch (speed) fixes ranged from +2.2 to +3.8% with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, differential equalisation applied, noise reduction applied separately to each channel to reduce hiss > CD Wave (track splits) > flacs (Trader’s Little Helper)

Thanks also to kneesfudd for sharing the James Gang track at Dime.

kneesfudd noted:

- Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Minor dropout in 1st split sec fade-in only partially repaired.
- Date a long-shot guess. Tape said “late 1968″. JG played KSU Student Union 1968-09-19 & maybe went on radio for promotion. Date fits&JG weren’t at KSU again ’til May ‘69.
- WKSU Studios - Also a guess! Tape circulated as WMMS (Cleveland station) but 89.7 WKSU also reaches Cleveland. Tape said Kent State Univ. & possibly call letters were an error.
- Mk4 version. DimeTravel remaster of roryglzep’s “Mk3″ 2011-08-20 upgrade, pitch corrected by the honorable PervFesser goody.
- Not a concert performance, but seems to be live in the radio studio.
- Has riffs from Over Under Sideways Down/Think About It/I Feel Fine/Blackbird a.o. Song title a creation by bpthree.
- Apologies for any errors on lineage and notes about different versions.
- As per some prior notes, “If anybody knows more details about this session, & whether there was more of it, please…” let us know!

Radio broadcast > unknown recording equipment > off-air master tape > ? > unknown generation Maxell UD reel @ 3&3/4IPS > Akai GX-220D playback > TASCAM CDRW-700 > CD-R > (wav) EAC (secure mode) > (flac) Trader’s Little Helper level 6 (align on sector boundaries) > Downloaded 2011-08-xx > TLH (WAV) > Audition (Pitch Bender - 34 cents) > TLH (FLAC Level 8, Sector boundaries aligned)

Remastering 2018-04-01: wav > Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, pitch (speed) correction already done by goody, NO equalisation or noise reduction] > CD Wave (track splits) > flacs (Trader’s Little Helper). Off-air tape (& likely the orig. brdcst tape) was MONO but was on 2 channel tape. After remastering&crosspatching, I used only the L channel with more high end.

  2. Thanks BigO,
Love Country Joe and Barry’s guitar playing. Love James Gang. This really doesn’t sound bad for it’s age. Of course people say that about me too.

  6. Wasn’t Nancy Wilson in the Supremes with Diana Ross ?

  7. I thought she was in Heart with her sister Ann . But I didn’t think she was 81 ‘ that would have made her in her forties when Heart came on the scene back in the seventies. Somethings not right with the info

I played the Budokan, Tokyo with David Coverdale
After rehearsing in LA with David Coverdale, we played the first show of a seven-date Japanese tour at the Budokan. We were here to promote the Coverdale Page album. In the set I played some of David’s material from Whitesnake, including ‘Still of the Night’ (yes, Zeppelinesque, but so well put together), along with Led Zeppelin and the new material from the Coverdale Page album.

  9. Hey Kelsey, the information is correct. The Nancy Wilson who passed away yesterday was an older woman with the same name, not a member of Heart, not a member of the Supremes, but a sublime artist in her own right.

  13. Neither Nancy Wilson - not the one who just died, nor the other one who was in Heart - was ever in the Supremes. Mary Wilson was in the Supremes.
