Spain 2019 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Pavillon Multiusos Fontes do Sar, Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain; April 29, 2019. Very good audience recording.

Jeffrey Greenblatt,; April 27, 2019:

Bob Dylan‘s Never Ending Tour brought him to Bilbao, Spain for a gig at the Bizkaia Arena on Friday (April 26). The legendary singer-songwriter switched up his setlist for the first time on his current European run by dusting off the deep cut “Dignity.” The setlist change came five songs into the night as Dylan swapped out “Cry A While” from his 2001 LP Love & Theft for the rarity.

Last night’s take on the tune was the bard’s first since November 12, 2012, and just the 54th ever version since was debuted during the recording of his MTV Unplugged special in 1994. A studio version of the song was originally included on Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume 3.

Masaki Minonishi,

Stage was set the lights went out, all around the “Pavillón Multiusos Fontes do Sar”, but no, it didn’t quite go out since it’s a gymnasium with natural lights, and this is Spain where the sun is still up at 21:00. Bob and the band came out, and the show started, but maybe because of the lights they seem slightly less concentrated than usual, or is it just me? The show picked up as the house got darker, and in the end it was a great show as usual.

Personal highlights include: Dignity - First time I heard this masterpiece live. Word perfect with the line “Dignity never been photographed”. Scarlet town - Love the effect he uses on his vocals which adds spookiness to the song. Like a Rolling Stone - First time I heard this new arrangement live, and I really love it. Lovesick - the fastest and the lightest arrangement I heard of this song. Again Bob uses vocal effects which is really cool. Since when did he start singing “You were searching my pocket while I was sleeping” instead of “You destroyed me with a smile While I was sleeping”? Thunder on the Mountain - Bob’s barking vocals, picking up with every verse, and George’s drums. Perfect as always. Gotta Serve Somebody - Almost like Thunder on the Mountain Part 2. I’m not sure if like this arrangement or not yet. Bob throwing in some funny new lyrics like “You may be hallucinating or you may seen a ghost”. It Takes a Lot to Laugh - Not quite sure when I heard this one last time, but it was great.

  5. Thanks Big O. I had been looking for this since hearing ‘Dignity’ before he took a break in the Spanish concerts and wondering about the mercurial twists and turns in Dylan’s output. We had been lulled maybe into a sense of knowing what he would do in recent years with the possible exception of turning to the American Songbook in 2015 but this is an extraordinary return to a stylistically very different style of singing (yes really!) and if you don’t believe me play that afore mentioned track or ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’ and see if you don’t agree!
    Wunnerful stuff
    Thanks! ;)

By Ron Jeremy on Jun 22, 2019

  17. Why anyone would pay good money to listen to a washed up singer croak and mumble like this is beyond belief. Bob Dylan is the best example of someone who should have hung it up years ago, rather than ruin what reputation he still has. Yes, I’m old enough to remember what he sounded like in his prime and I spent money to see him. Not anymore. Sorry Bob.

By TJ on Jun 22, 2019

  18. TJ “ you and Pat Grooms are ageists . There are racists and bigots and you apparently are an agest . Bob Dylan is a living legend for Christ sake.

By George on Jun 23, 2019

  19. Ok, TJ, you’re not with the classic rock program. What do you want instead? Same question for you, Ms Grooms.

Thank you for this, BigO, a good performance, well recorded.

By Brian Griffin on Jun 23, 2019

  20. OK George… “ageist”? Bob Dylan is a living legend who can no longer justify being called a singer. If you honestly think he’s a good singer (or even just a singer) then I question your judgement. Your idea of an “ageist” is B.S. Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, even Enrico Caruso produced incredible music which I incedently still like to enjoy, and they were popular before I was born. I like good singing, no matter who’s doing it.

By TJ on Jun 23, 2019

  21. I guess I’m the other T J . Everybody here copies others names so what’s new ? I disagree with the fake TJ . Bob is excellent here as he has been for almost 60 years . And he has a big one too . What more do you want TJ number two ?

    By T J on Jun 23, 2019

  22. Bob Dylan is a shriveled up old geezer who croaks instead of sings . He should have retired 20 years ago . All the old geezers . McCartney ‘ Elton ‘ Springsteen ‘ Neil Young ‘ Paul Simon etc . Have some dignity. Go away

By Pat Grooms on Jun 23, 2019

  23. Bob Dylan is an amazing singer but he’s gross to look at . I would have fucked him when he was young but not now . Having a big penis is a big plus but not in this case he’s so gross looking.

By Katie Kessler on Jun 23, 2019

  24. Look cocsuckers ‘ Bob is the man . Sure I’m disappointed that he’s a fuckin Jew bastard ‘ but I was a fan before I found out so I’ll overlook it in his case . At least he ain’t pollutin our race like the ape faced coons banging all the white bitches creating more hi yeller mongrol kids

By Derrick on Jun 23, 2019

  25. Again I agree with Brian G and this is staggering stuff. Fascinating how much he has altered arrangements again and is actually singing and not croaking as the deaf here cannot seem to hear

Two things if you do anything today listen to ‘Dignity’ (for a multitude of reasons songwriting being apposite for one) and listen to ‘Don’t Think Twice’ if you want to hear a genius reinvent himself . . . .

    That is all
once again Big O thanks SO much to IS appreciated

By swappers on Jun 23, 2019

  26. Fuck Bob Dylqn . He’s a fucking Jew and a nigger lover too . He ruined my life . The asshole.
