EDWYN COLLINS
Glasgow 2019 [no label, 1CD]

The Quay Sessions. Live at St Luke’s, Glasgow, Scotland. April 8, 2019 (broadcast April 25, 2019). Very good audio (ripped from HDTV webcast).

Thanks to auto_pilot for sharing the show at Dime.

Edwyn Collins was the lead singer for the 1980s post-punk band Orange Juice, which he co-founded. Following the group’s split in 1985, Collins started a solo career. His 1995 single “A Girl Like You” was a worldwide hit.

In March 2019, Edwyn Collins released his ninth solo album, Badbea. theguardian.com wrote: “Edwyn Collins’ ninth solo album carries the unmistakable air of a man looking back, lyrically and musically. It’s not just the title track, a lament for the hard lives of the Highlanders in a tiny village that is now “a ruined monument to life and death”. It’s there in Outside, in which fuzzed, frantic Ramones guitars are accompanied by a lyric repeating that band’s old mantra of “I don’t care”. But it’s not the defiance of youth that makes him uncaring: “Now I’m old, I don’t care.” That theme is picked up on Glasgow to London, on which Collins reflects on how there was a time “Ambition drove my life / Now I’m old I must admit I couldn’t give a fuck.”

That’s not to say this is a recorded equivalent of one of those Grumpy Old Men talking heads’ shows on TV. Even when Collins is excoriating selfishness on It’s All About You, he does so with the same arch beauty he employed back in the Orange Juice days: “The sun was a bright bikini yellow / The sky was a Wedgwood blue / The mood was unspeakably mellow / When you came and spoilt the view.” You couldn’t call Badbea wildly original; it’s filled with references to Collins’s musical touchstones (northern soul; the Velvet Underground) and an explicit melodic link to Big Star’s Feel in I’m OK Jack. But Collins is in fine voice, and it’s always a pleasure to have him back.

By Smashmouth on Jul 16, 2019

  3. On this day in 1970 I used the opening riffs of Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor from my Yardbird days and created the same opening riff for Zeps The Song Remains The Same. Another one of my famous ripoffs.

By Jimmy Page on Jul 16, 2019

  4. Jimmy you dimwit. How can it be a ripoff when you take it from yourself. Maybe you weren’t looking. No wonder nobody but Roy Harper wants to play with you.

  11. I’ve got a lot of patience when it comes to giving music I’ve never heard a chance to fit into my collection, but fuck me in the ass with a sideways rake, this guy has the worst voice I’ve ever heard, well, since Emo Phillips or Ogden Edsl at least!

By John Paul Bones on Jul 16, 2019

  16. I played with Jimmy on the Lord Sutch sessions back in 69-70 and more people have heard of Screamin Lord Sutch than Orange Juice. Are you kidding me Saddam Imfucked

By John Paul Bones on Jul 16, 2019

  17. Thanks for this Big O - a little variety did no one any harm. Most of us appreciate your eclectic choices even if we can’t say that we always like the music.

By Dan on Jul 16, 2019

  18. Does it occur to anyone else whether these trolls can actually read? Or is it merely the usual extreme right Merkin xenophobic racist fascist loving meatheads think music begins and ends with USA soft rock (with an emphasis on the ’soft’). No wonder they want to build a wall, I wouldn’t let the fuckers out either!
    ;)

P.S Thanks Big O the life story of Edwyn Collins is a moving one and his rehabilitation and recovery well documented and he needs out support so this is much appreciated. I did think the poster was right in that ‘A Girl Like You’ was a world wide hit but >>sigh<< ignorance is no excuse!

  19. I actually liked darth . Now we have fake darths as well .i would love to think that the comment above was him but he only talked music and was never so short with his comments.

By dropkicksarge on Jul 16, 2019

  21. I don’t need a singer to have a great voice (I even like Dylan’s current whisper/croaking and I enjoyed Leonard Cohen’s later work), but this guy’s voice is unlistenable for me.

By Rick on Jul 17, 2019

  22. Speaking personally I don’t like Edwyn Collins’ music and I never have.

That doesn’t count for anything but what does count is that we are miles away from the classic rock program. Floyd, Tull, Dead, Jimi, Free, Traffic, Stones, Who, Doors, Clapton, Kinks…c’mon BigO, let’s go.

  28. Thanks for this one - very unexpected & superb.

Shame all these trolls have taken over the site, they definitely aren’t music lovers or have much knowledge to be disrespecting this site. Keep posting decent live shows.

  29. Another great gem . Generally speaking I didn’t care much for Dylan after the seventies, infidels was an exception though . Probably his best album of the eighties

  30. Ad nauseam . . . . . .

    ;)

  31. Opps wrong section ‘ my apologies

By Bill on Jul 17, 2019

  32. Not that it matters to most of those bozos here, but Edwyn Collins had two cerebral haemorrhages which caused him to lose his speaking abilities. A long recovery period brought it back, so maybe cut him some slack for his voice, will ya..?

By This is just to say on Jul 19, 2019

  33. Please close the comments section Big O. It’s way past time. And thanks for the great music!! I love the variety. I definitely didn’t have any bootlegs of Edwyn Collins…
