Anchorage 2019 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Bear Tooth Theatre, Anchorage, AK; August 2, 2019. Fairly to very good audience recording.

Thanks to Steve “ballsdeep” Hagar for sharing the show at Dime. Thanks also to Dennis Orr (mastering).

ballsdeeper noted:

On February 1 (day before the Super Bowl), Norah Jones in Anchorage tix went on sale… I was in Nashville for Magpie, and it sold out in two minutes. Two more shows were added over the next two days, same scenario. Anchorage was livid, accusing bots, and the whole Metallica/LN thing added fuel to the fire.

The Bear Tooth even did an audit, and found that 94 per cent of the tix were purchased from Alaska zip codes… so much for that theory (they determined the “8 ticket limit” was partially to blame, so they lowered it to 4 tix for the 3rd show, but it didn’t matter).

OK, enough blah blah leading up to this, a good buddy from high school was one of the ‘lucky ones’ for night 1, so I made the 350 mile haul to Anchorage (first half was crap weather), driving thru clouds in the hills for the first 50 miles with 100 yard visibility at times, if that. But the skies cleared nicely for the last half of the drive, and was full sunshine by evening.

This was my annual “tape something out of your comfort zone, dipshit” attempt, and my goodness it was a fantastic decision. The few shows I’ve seen of hers, setlist-wise online, were 17-18 songs, and we got 20! On top of that, during the course of the show, the audience learned that Norah actually lived in Anchorage for six months… when she was 12!!!

This was mentioned more than once during the course of the show… moreso at the end, as she claimed she doesn’t like to talk much onstage, but she made an exception for us. Hank Williams, Grateful Dead, and Neil Young covers, and a smoky, sultry chanteuse to back it up.

Her drummer was almost more entertaining than her… imagine a female-ish Chunk (from “Goonies”) with a mullet… with a limp-wristed playing style to die-for. (I’m guessing ‘jazz’ players do this, as all kinds of noise was coming from the kit, but not a whole lot of movement).

And Norah plays electric and acoustic guitar as well…

ALMS and THANKS for Dennis… his motherboard melted on his main music computer… yet he’s STILL cranking my crap out for your pleasure.

Any “big stinks”… just throw them my way… for snacks and stuff.

  9. Now we’re talking! Thanks Big O another gem from the breathtakingly beautiful and supremely talented Norah Jones. We love her round our way. Think I have every studio recording and more ROIOs are always exciting. She is so multi-talented and the eclecticism of her work is truly fascinating from her ubiquitous smooth jazz sounds to country and rockin’ electric with the The Little Willies (and let’s face it there’s enough of THOSE round here lately!!)

    Thanks Big O

  10. I’m still pissed off about the 02 Grammys where this woman swept everything in sight , denying Bruce Springsteen what should have been his night for The Rising .

By Quincy on Sep 15, 2019

  11. Hey Anti ‘ The NFL network is showing complete old football games on Saturday nights. Last night they had the first Monday night game ever from 1970 . Howard Cosell and Dandy Don Meredith. Keith Jackson was the play by play guy the first year and Gifford replaced him after that .

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  12. Man those guys looked little compared to today , in other words no fuckin steroids and muscle bound giants that look more like bodybuilders . They looked like regular dudes . Also no fuckin in your face shit acting like apes when the score a touchdown. Just handin the ball to the refs and respectin the opponent.

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  13. It was Browns vs Jets . Joe Namath and Co . Emerson Boozer ‘ Matt Snell ‘ Don Maynard ‘ George Sauer . If you looked at the sidelines it was mainly white players with a few coons sprinkled in but mostly white as it should be .No Odell Beckams or Ant Browns and their bullshit tattoos ‘ dreadlocks and the rest . Snell and Boozer didn’t act like that

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  14. Also no sticky gloves for the receivers. You actually had to catch the motherfuckin ball with your hands . These apes today could never play without them fuckin gloves .Also no protecting the QB with all them bullshit ticky tac penalties. Back then it was real football. You could fuckin hit people. It’s a bunch of sissy’s today . Browns had Bill Nelson at QB , Leroy Kelly at RB .Gary Collins at WR .Milt Moran at tight end . Mostly white players cept for Kelly

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  15. Anti , ever notice how fewer injuries there was back then . Dudes were smaller and lighter more flexible. A offensive and defensive lineman was between 240 and 260 pounds . 275 was considered a giant . These days 240 is a fuckin tight end . Everybody on the lines is close to or way above 300 pounds . To my way of thinking that’s not best for the body . That’s why so many dudes get hurt . The bodies weren’t meant to carry all that weight . Players break down more now than back then .

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  16. Fuckin Camcoon Newton is 260 pounds . That was a lineman in the 60s and 70s

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  17. Leroy Jordan from my Dallas Cowboys was about 215 to 225. When he played linebacker. Never got hurt in 15 years . He wouldn’t make the team today . Linebackers got to be 250 plus today . Look at Sean Lee . 250 pounds and always hurt .

  18. miracles do happen …Derrick speaks a modicum of truth but is this the right place to state his opinion ? Derrick are you afraid to speak up in public places like bars ? Derrick don’t you have drinking buddies to share your views with over a cold one or two ? are you not allow out ? pray to me and perhaps i’ll can change your wifey’s mind about letting you hang out with the boys.

By jesus christ king of the jews on Sep 15, 2019

  19. Namath threw a fuckin pick six to lose the game 31 21 . He threw about 4,in this game . How the fuck did the fuckin jets beat the colts in that super bowl ? Namath made a career off that fuckin game . Fucked movie stars and beautiful women . Had a talk show with Dic Shafpt . Bachelors3 night club until Rozelle made him sell it . Starred in movies . CC and company where he gets naked with Ann Margret , Last Rebel a western . Tv and talk show appearances. All cause of that super bowl

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  20. Joe fuckin Namath threw more interceptions than touchdowns in it career by far . He never had one fuckin season that he threw more tds than ints . How the fuck is he in the fuckin hall of fame ? First ballot too . It’s that fuckin Super Bowl that Morrall threw along with his owner Rosenbloom to get the mob off his back . Namath should have had Earl Morrall give his introduction speech

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  21. All this while my guys Chuck Howley ‘ Leroy Jordan and Mike mad dog Curtis still ain’t in the fuckin hall . It’s a travesty

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  22. Nowadays if you want to be in the hall you gotta be a tattooed coon who played in the nineties and beyond. Fuckin Ray Lewis ? Give me a break . Curtis ‘ Howley and Jordan was way more deserving and better linebackers than Lewis . These modern young whippersnappers who vote never saw them play .

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  23. Plus Ray Lewis is a fuckin murderer . Never served a day in jail now he’s in the hall while Curtis ‘ Howley ‘ Jordon ‘ Drew Pearson ‘ Charlie Waters ‘ Cliff Harris get old and still wait .

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  24. Ed two tall Jones and Harvey Martin got over 100 career sacks each for my cowboys and ain’t in the hall . Took Bullet Bob Hayes decades to get in after he was already dead . Thank god The packers Jerry Kramer finally got in after almost 50 fuckin years . Bob Lilly who played against Kramer for years campaigned for him to get in

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  25. The voters today are too fuckin young to have seen the old timers . They is the same people who probly listen to this rap shit and queer music today .

By Derrick on Sep 15, 2019

  26. Everything Derrick says is right on . I can’t stand the modern black pro athletes. Everything is in your face . It’s not really a racial thing per say but more cultural. There were black players in the past that didn’t behave this way .

By Nelson on Sep 15, 2019

  27. People of all races are generally more disrespectful today . It’s just the world we live in .

By Nelson on Sep 15, 2019

  28. Come on guys! Over 15 comments about American sports! On a music site? Can you not find somewhere more suitable to discuss the wide wide world of sports as Slim Pickens would have had it.
I realise you are in the majority here but for pity’s sake . . . . . . .that’s trolling and just because you are in the majority doesn’t make it worth a read for anyone else!
    Sorry . . . . .

By swappers on Sep 16, 2019

  29. I was also a Dallas Cowboy and Baltimore Colts fan growing up . Cried when the pokes lost the Ice Bowl in 67 on the Starr QB sneak . Remember Meredith crying In the locker room after the game . Watched Super bowl III on tv as well .That game was fixed in my opinion. The Colts blew everyone out that year . Earl Morrall missing wide open Jimmy Orr in the end zone and throwing 5 interceptions in the first half . Fishy to say the least . Word was Don Shula wanted to go to Unitas earlier but the owner nixed it from the stands .Very suspiciousl.

By Larry on Sep 16, 2019

  30. I think Unitas was hurt most of that year if memory serves me .Shit it’s been over 50 years .
