Minneapolis 2019 [no label, 1CD]

Rock The Garden. Live at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; June 29, 2019 (broadcast July 20, 2019). Very good audio (ripped from HDTV webcast).

Rock acts don’t come much more resilient than legendary Los Angeles punk band X. “What a beautiful park and a beautiful city,” singer Exene Cervenka raved a few songs into her band’s impressively hard-throttling 50-minute set, not complaining once about the weather. She and her 60s-aged bandmates tore such riotous staples as “White Girl” and “Hungry Wolf” but also coolly slowed down for the doo-woppy “Come Back to Me.” In the latter, cancer-surviving guitarist Billy Zoom delivered a lengthy sax solo with his guitar pick stuck to his forehead - the sweat helping him make sure he didn’t lose it. - startribune.com

  4. I’m not impressed with what they did to Jerry Lee’s “Breathless.” But I’m sure this an audience for this kind of thing, and I commend Bigo for making it available.

  10. Someone who hasn’t even heard of singer, artist, poet Exene Cervenka and her legendary punk band ‘X’ doesn’t like music (even if you don’t like punk you should have heard of her they are that important in terms of Californian punk) and is probably in the wrong place.

  12. I last saw X two years ago, September, 2017. Awesome show, one of the best, and I’ve seen them many times since their early days.

Question: anyone know where I can get a copy of “X! Live In Latin America” that they released in 2018 via a Kickstarter campaign?

  13. I played the Hollywood Bowl with Robert Plant
“Well here it was, the famed Hollywood Bowl with its history of spellbinding performances. For me, the first time to be playing it (neither Yardbirds nor Led Zeppelin had appeared here). The venue itself has quite a charm and is truly iconic and during this tour we were only to play this one show in LA. Imagine our dismay when we launched into a spirited version of Wanton Song to look to the audience and see the front row is empty, going back quite a distance. The missing persons managed to appear around the beginning of Ramble On. Yes, you’ve probably guessed it, LA: golden ticket, side of stage, champagne tents… unknown to me, we were now a commodity being sold on what I think of as a corporate ticket!”

  19. I love X, but this set really is mostly by the numbers, both in performance and limited setlist. Good, but they’re capable of so much more.
