THE ROLLING STONES
Foxborough 2019 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA; July 7, 2019. Very good audience recording.

Craig S Semon, telegram.com:

With the Stones all in their 70s (Jagger, 75; Keith Richards, 75; Charlie Watts, 78; and Ronnie Wood, 72) and with combined age of 300 for the four members, the band had something to prove. And proved they did.

Less than three months after having life-saving heart surgery, Jagger’s back on stage, bigger, badder (in a good way), bolder and more bodacious as ever. On Sunday night, this wasn’t a man on his last leg. This was a man in the prime of his life.

Opening act Gary Clark Jr. joined the Stones for a blistering cover of Eddie Taylor’s 1955 blues classic (and early evening standout), “Ride ’Em on Down.” Not only did Jagger and Clark trade off lyrics with aplomb, Clark, Richards and Woods proved to be a triple threat as they traded off sweaty and sinewy blues licks.

The Stones got up close and personal for a stripped-down mini-set on the B-Stage at the end of the catwalk. Performing “Play With Fire” and “Dead Flowers” (with Mick on the acoustic guitar); this was a rock ‘n’ roll dream come true for Stones fans.

After an absolutely stellar version of the timeless rock ‘n’ roll sermon, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” (aka the funeral procession in “The Big Chill”) and the always dependable bump and grind “Honky Tonk Women,” Jagger joked how the Fourth of July weekend is “a touchy holiday for us Brits.”

Referencing President Trump’s recent Independence Day remarks, Jagger proved that he has a career in stand-up if his music career ever peters out with the funny line, “If only the British held onto the airports, the whole thing might have gone a little bit differently.”

While the one-two punch of Richards’ and Wood’s duel-guitar assault was enough to make “Gimme Shelter” an evening standout, transforming it into a scorching duet between Jagger and powerhouse backing vocalist (and former semifinalist of “The Voice”) Sasha Allen made the number a bona fide showstopper.
