With Dan Fogelberg
Washington 1979 [no label, 1CD]

Coalition Rally-Anti-Nuclear Rally. Live at the Capitol Steps, Washington DC; May 6, 1979. Fairly to very good FM broadcast.

Thanks to mjk5510 for sharing the show at Dime.

mjk5510 noted:

This appearance by Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and Dan Fogelberg on the steps of the Capitol in Washington DC was billed as the May 6 Coalition Rally-Anti-Nuclear Rally and broadcast on regional FM radio. It appears to be under-circulated.

Each performer does backup vocals for the others’ set, Graham Nash and John Hall also sing backup vocals. Joni’s set is very good quality, Jackson’s not so much, these clearly came from two different broadcasts. I’ve cleaned up the Jackson as best I can without totally destroying the audio. I believe that Dan Fogelberg, Graham Nash and John Hall did separate sets but I don’t have access to those. Thanks to my old friend MR for the files.

  5. Joni Mitchell sounds like an old hag here . Too many cigarettes and she was 36 at this point . I prefer here earlier music when she could still sing .

By Pat Grooms on Dec 13, 2019

  6. I remember catching an early bus from the post office at Morristown NJ to be there. Chilly but sunny morning, looking at the grassy lawn of the church across the street, waiting for the bus. John Sebastian also performed at the rally and, among others, Ralph Nader, Kurt Vonnegut, Jerry Brown, Abbie Hoffman and Jane Fonda spoke.

On a side note, I’m guessing most of these sensitive acoustic folkies gots nuthin but Limp Uns. But what do I know? Anyways, thanks Big O as always for all the music.

  7. They’re all limp except Joni. I think 1979 was Peak Cocaine for a lot of these guys, especially Graham Nash.

I’d love to hear the other sets, if they exist.

BTW my great grandfather owned the Morristown Inn, but lost it in 1929 when the stock market crashed. My mom inherited one soup spoon that says “MORRISTOWN INN” on it. Still works great!

  8. Joni dated Jackson in the early seventies and also Graham Nash whom she wrote the song Willy (His Nickname). She got to experience both of their big uns many times.

    By T J on Dec 14, 2019

  9. Joni also dated James Taylor’Leonard Cohen’and Warren Beatty all legendary big uns.She was well known for being a size queen.

    By T J on Dec 14, 2019

  10. It should go without saying-but apparently it needs to be pointed out- that this is an inferior quality recording and not representative of her voice at the time. This was recorded just five years after the terrific live album Miles of Aisles.

For a more accurate sense of her 1979 voice, check this out:

  11. And here’s the same song at The Last Waltz-a mere three years before the show posted by Bigozine. I’m not really a know it all, I just know more about music than some of you.

By Mark on Dec 14, 2019

  12. Don’t be so modest Mark . Of course you are a know it all . The smartest person on Big O .Three cheers for Mark the genius.

    By T J on Dec 14, 2019

  13. @Eric

Dan Fogelberg could never ever be described as limp, his voice was sublime and his song writing even better

    A very dearly missed musician!

  14. Dan Fogleberg was a Jew . Obviously.

  15. Anytime someone’s name ends in berg ‘ stein or witz they are Jews

    By T J on Dec 14, 2019

  16. Checked out the YouTube video. Joni’s voice was deeper than in the sixties and early seventies but it was actually better for The jazzier sound she was into at that time . I believe she did an album in 79 called Mingus , dedicated to jazz legend Charles Mingus .

By Bill on Dec 14, 2019

  17. Interesting to see a young Jaco Pastorious in that video on bass. One of the all time greats . He had many issues and passed way too soon . Believe he died after being beaten in a bar fight . Very tragic ending. It seemed as if his bass was talking to the audience. What a talent.

By Bill on Dec 14, 2019

  18. Thanks bigO for this. I check the site often to catch the other quality uploads from many different years and genres (despite all the crap a couple of sad lonely morons continually post). For accuracy, the Joni recordings need speed adjusting by about +4.5% (which also gives a much more accurate representation of her voice!)

  19. That’s not saying much, TJ you set the bar pretty low.

By Jerry MacD on Dec 14, 2019

  21. @ China

Agreed. I don’t think he was limp, or that he was much of a coke user. He suffered from intense stage fright, which is a shame, because his concerts, especially the Carnegie Hall show, are excellent.

I humbly withdraw my remark, with apologies.

By Eric on Dec 14, 2019

  22. The truth is these are all very talented musicians who gave their time for a noble cause. And while all of you seem so hell-bent on dismantling them, keep this in mind: none of you were up there donating yours.

By Beacher on Dec 15, 2019

  23. So whats the motherfuckin truth ? Always liked Fogelberg. Was he a jew bastard or not?Still tryin to come to terms with dylan bein one

By Derrick on Dec 15, 2019

  28. Catholic priests is all motherfuckin queer perverts who rape little boys. They is as bad as jew bastards.

By Derrick on Dec 15, 2019

  29. Think the pope and the Vatican tries to cover up that shit when it happens. They just move them priests around to new areas so they can do it again . I’m gettin pissed off thinkin bout it . The motherfuckers

By Derrick on Dec 15, 2019

  30. Catholics are worse than Jews . Priests who rape young boys / confession booths / holy communion and holy water . Priests are supposed to be celibate and not have relationships with women or men assuming they’re gay . No wonder they are so fucked up.
