Chicago 2019 [no label, 1CD]

Lollapalooza. Live at Grant Park, Chicago, IL; August 1, 2019. Very good audio (ripped from HDTV webcast).

Nicole Blackwood;

Because King Princess’ music is often highly digitized, the most cynical Lolla attendee might wonder whether her set was worth seeing. But King Princess (aka Mikaela Straus) is, by nature, a performer, and the way she moves onstage, her come-hither tug-of-war with the audience, is half the fun. Everything she says is sultry, everything she does appears spontaneous.

A cardboard-looking couch figured as part of her stage, and after remarking on it, she climbed atop it, straddling the armrest. Beginning with “Upper West Side,” a song from her 2018 EP, she proved herself a cocky performer for someone without a full-length album - and the shtick worked, luring the audience in, holding them there. A personality cult, for even those unfamiliar with her personality (brash and bold and very, very gay)

In one introduction, she said, “I’m going to ask you go through a crisis with me on this one, but I know you gays know about that.” Only a few cheers - the Lolla crowd was not the queer twenty-somethings that flock to a normal King Princess concert. But by the time the song, an unreleased track, started playing, it didn’t matter; they were putty in her hands. That’s the thing about Straus: she can manifest the audience she wants and win them over simultaneously. The musician is the music, as much as the reverse is also true.

In October 2019, King Princess released her debut studio album, Cheap Queen.

The album was written chronologically, with Straus stating that she named the album Cheap Queen after the drag term for a queen that is “resourceful, making something out of not very much”. While Straus started her career with songs like “1950″ and “Pussy Is God”, The Guardian remarked that she swaps out those “queer pop anthems for understated ballads”. Straus explained that the album’s sound came about as she was “dealing with the most vulnerable year of my life” after the popularity of “1950″, as she was under “complete stress and anxiety, and not knowing what to do with myself or with my body, and then also being in love”. - wikipedia

  9. My son attended this concert and told me that she was fantastic. He had never heard of her. He also liked a band called The Nude Party that performed at Lollapalooza and The Idles also….see if you can find those two sets to share.
