JULIA HÜLSMANN QUINTET
Plays Beatles
Hamburg 2019 [no label, 1CD]

Elbjazz Festival. Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg, Germany; June 1 2019. Very good webcast.

German jazz pianist and composer Julia Hülsmann’s compositions are often based on literary works, especially poetry. Her teachers include Walter Norris, Aki Takase and David Friedman. In particular, she was inspired and influenced by US pianist and composer Don Grolnick. In early 2000, Hülsmann took lessons while studying in New York with Richie Beirach, Maria Schneider, Gil Goldstein and Jane Ira Bloom. Since 2001 she also has a teaching assignment at the Berlin University of the Arts and holds composition workshops at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. From 2012 until the end of 2013 she was the chairman of the Union of German Jazz Musicians. As the successor to Michael Schiefel, she was able to give impulses to the music scene Moers throughout the year 2014, as an “improviser in residence”. - wikipedia

  2. Don’t like this one…give me the REAL Beatles please BigO

By Sarah Novak on Mar 15, 2020

  3. Sarah, bigO has given you a TROVE of Beatles. It is interesting to hear interpretations. Yet listening to Julia now, it is possible to place the starkness and pain into a remake that John put into the original recording.

  10. Broads are so stupid when it comes to music. They are good for cleaning house, having babies and hopefully keeping men satisfied with tongue and twat .

  11. Nick - is it true the last piece of ass you got was when the toilet paper ripped?

  12. This is not real jazz . Another modern day abomination. Incoherent noise pollution. Also that mental midget above is not me , although the pea brain constantly posts the same monotonous crap on practically every post .

  13. Thx for this. ‘Real’ jazz or not Hülsmann is good enough to have released several albums on ECM. And for those who listen she makes some fine interpretations of Beatles songs (that certainly most people would consider ‘jazz’).
