Germany 2019 [no label, 1CD]

Bluesfestival. Schöppingen, Germany; June 8, 2019. Very good FM broadcast.

Fantastic Negrito, is an American singer-songwriter whose music spans blues, R&B, hip-hop and roots music. His 2016 album, The Last Days of Oakland, won a Grammy award for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 59th Grammy Awards. In 2019, his album Please Don’t Be Dead won the same category at the 61st Grammy Awards.

One day his son was cranky, and, out of solutions to satiate the kid, Negrito pulled out a guitar that ended up reigniting his creative juices. No, it wasn’t some closet classic 1958 sunburst Les Paul. Quite the opposite, really.

“It was a cheap guitar from Thailand, and I hated it,” says Negrito. “My friend, who had stolen some of my equipment because he was on heroin, gave me that guitar to try to make up for it. I was trying to sell it but nobody wanted it. So there it was, under that couch for five years. I picked that thing up, man, and looked at my son and strummed a G chord. I looked at this kid’s enjoyment of hearing the strings resonate with that wood. It made me feel so many different emotions - I was a little bit scared, excited - and I could feel the tingling behind my neck. That became the slow walk back to just playing. I learned ‘Across the Universe.’ I thought, ‘I’m gonna play this for my son to get him to sleep every night,’ and it worked like a charm.”

  3. Not exactly my bag, but it makes me wonder how a guy like this who can’t really be pigeon holed into a specific category was able to get his material out there. It’s not the type of stuff that can play any local bar to gain momentum, yet he got the exposure necessary to be nominated for a Grammy!!

Why aren’t labels hitting dive joints in every ‘other’ major city looking for new young rock bands? There’s got to be more than Greta Van Fleet pounding away!!!

  8. Would you trolls shut the fuck up ? You are not even the people you sign off as. Your childish act , or acts is getting old and tiresome. Every single post , the same shit . Pardon my French.

  9. This is not my thing at all . At the risk of being accused of being another seventies snob , modern so called music just isn’t as good . My opinion.

By George on Jul 6, 2020

  10. But hey Derrick, is she really the one in that video that you showed me and HHH??

By George on Jul 6, 2020

  11. derrick, you are such an idiot. I think that a lot of you are shying away from an obvious truth, that the kind of blatant racial prejudice we are witnessing here on Big O has everything to do with stupidity.

I’m talking about low intelligence, lack of mental ability, cognitive rigidity. The Big O racists may be a lot of other things—hateful, insecure, misogynistic, homophobic—but let’s not sugar-coat what most intelligent thinkers know in their hearts: A person of intelligence cannot embrace such authoritarian and racist views. derrick, hhh (hardly half human), nelson, david duke. you’re all fools.
