Introduction to the Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Series

Welcome to JEMS’ Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin done in and around Los Angeles circa 1975-77.

Until 2020, the Lost and Found series presented fresh transfers of previously unavailable first-generation copies made by Mike himself for friends like Stan Gutoski of JEMS, Jim R, Bill C. and Barry G. These sources were upgrades to circulating copies and in most instances marked the only time verified first generation Millard sources had been directly digitized in the torrent era.

That all changed with the discovery of many of Mike Millard’s original master tapes.

Yes, you read that correctly, Mike Millard’s master cassettes, long rumored to be destroyed or lost, have been found. Not all of them but many, and with them a much more complete picture has emerged of what Millard recorded between his first show in late 1973 and his last in early 1992.

The reason the rediscovery of his master tapes is such a revelation is that we’ve been told for decades they were gone. Internet myths suggest Millard destroyed his master tapes before taking his own life, an imprudent detail likely concocted based on the assumption that because his master tapes never surfaced and Mike’s mental state was troubled he would do something rash WITH HIS LIFE’S WORK. There’s also a version of the story where Mike’s family dumps the tapes after he dies. Why would they do that?

The truth is Mike’s masters remained in his bedroom for many years after his death in 1994. We know at least a few of Millard’s friends and acquaintances contacted his mother Lia inquiring about the tapes at the time to no avail. But in the early 2000s, longtime Millard friend Rob S was the one she knew and trusted enough to preserve Mike’s work.

Suzi Quatro - The Forum, Inglewood, CA; June 17, 1975

After the heady, heavy and discussion-provoking Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath releases of the last two weeks, the Millard series takes its foot off the gas a little this holiday weekend with ’70s rocker Suzi Quatro opening for Alice Cooper.

Preparing this week’s recording is a lighter lift because Quatro was the opening act and her set is under an hour. Though only five feet tall herself, as she mentions during the show, what Quatro lacks in height she more than makes up in attitude which is pure rock ’n’ roll myth stuff, imploring the crowd to get with her program. While I’m not familiar with her catalog, it’s hard not to get sucked into her familiar ‘70s guitar-rock on pure commitment level alone.

Even if you don’t give a rip about Quatro, download this if only to marvel at the quality of Millard’s pull which is outstanding, sounding very similar to Black Sabbath. Jim says he and Mike were in the 2nd row, dead center and his photos reflect their up-close position. Samples provided.

JEMS is proud to partner with Rob, Jim R and Barry G to release Millard’s historic recordings and to help set the record straight about the man himself.

We can’t thank Rob enough for reconnecting with Jim and putting his trust in our Millard reissue campaign. He kept these precious tapes under wraps for two decades, but once Rob learned of our methods and stewardship, he agreed to contribute the Millard DATs and cassettes to the program. Our releases would not be nearly as compelling without Jim’s memories and photos. As many of you have noted, the stories offer an entertaining complement to Mike’s incredible audio documents.

As always, post-production support courtesy of the always-game mjk5510, our partner and friend. JEMS’ Archive would be a very sorry state if not for the work he and a few other allies did a year or so ago.

Finally, cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone. His work never ceases to impress. May he rest in peace.

  3. Thanks BigO. This should be a fun listen. Here’s hoping you’ll be sharing the Alice Cooper portion from this night. I have a boot called School’s Out Live from this date but not sure it was a Millard version. It doesn’t have the same punch as this Suzi Quatro.

  5. I was at this show . Suzi and I had a three way with Alice Cooper ( l called him Vince ) after both had finished their sets . Alice had a very big Coc and took turns with Suzi and myself. I remember giving Suzi head while Alice gave it to me from behind , then we would switch off and she would pleasure me as Alice rammed her . This all occurred backstage of course.

  6. I remember Alice would use his snakes as dildos as foreplay , Jim Morrison would do that too .

  7. Ian Anderson would use his flute for the same thing .

  8. Hearing these stories makes me horny as hell . I was born in 81 and feel so deprived that I missed out on the 1970s . I’m so envious of those 70s groupies. How I wish I had been born 25 to 30 years earlier .

  12. Born in 1981. Dee Dee you look older than that. If you’d been born in the 70’s you’d be older than dirt. With all those STD’s too.

  13. Hey David Duke, go choke on a sausage.

  14. It is really great when you have a super performance combined with a superior sound capture on great equipment! BTW, Suzi was a guest star on Happy Days! Suzi and the FONZ! You know sparks were flyin somewhere. In the 90’s Fonz was a producer whose office was near the Disney Channel Building in Burbank CA where I worked at the time. He would walk down and pick up his lunch from the little Italian place on the corner. He wore a 3 piece suit, sharply done, but his hair was incredibly long, and it was real. In the mid-70’s, I sold shoes to Joanie from Happy Days. May she rest in peace.
