Introduction to the Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Series

Welcome to JEMS’ Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin done in and around Los Angeles circa 1975-77.

Until 2020, the Lost and Found series presented fresh transfers of previously unavailable first-generation copies made by Mike himself for friends like Stan Gutoski of JEMS, Jim R, Bill C and Barry G. These sources were upgrades to circulating copies and in most instances marked the only time verified first generation Millard sources had been directly digitized in the torrent era.

That all changed with the discovery of many of Mike Millard’s original master tapes.

Yes, you read that correctly, Mike Millard’s master cassettes, long rumored to be destroyed or lost, have been found. Not all of them but many, and with them a much more complete picture has emerged of what Millard recorded between his first show in late 1973 and his last in early 1992.

The reason the rediscovery of his master tapes is such a revelation is that we’ve been told for decades they were gone. Internet myths suggest Millard destroyed his master tapes before taking his own life, an imprudent detail likely concocted based on the assumption that because his master tapes never surfaced and Mike’s mental state was troubled he would do something rash WITH HIS LIFE’S WORK. There’s also a version of the story where Mike’s family dumps the tapes after he dies. Why would they do that?

The truth is Mike’s masters remained in his bedroom for many years after his death in 1994. We know at least a few of Millard’s friends and acquaintances contacted his mother Lia inquiring about the tapes at the time to no avail. But in the early 2000s, longtime Millard friend Rob S was the one she knew and trusted enough to preserve Mike’s work.

Yes - The Forum, Inglewood, CA; March 18, 1974

The Magical Millard Tour continues with the earliest recording of one of his favorite bands, Yes, performing on the Tales of Topographic Oceans tour. This is only the fifth live recording Mike ever made according to his original list and, as fate would have it, the very next night in Long Beach was when Mike met Jim R and their partnership was born.

As Yes collectors know, Mike recorded both LA and Long Beach on the Topo tour, with Long Beach being the better and more complete of the two recordings. That being said, for a March 1974 audience capture made before Mike upgraded his equipment, The Forum tapes are quite good and certainly among the stronger documents of the tour.

Yes Forum ’74 comes from the first batch of tapes Rob S borrowed, transferred to DAT and returned, so our source is the DAT he made in the early 2000s. That also means we’re only releasing a 1644 edition. Undoubtedly due to the age of the original cassettes when Rob made his transfer, there is some light instability in the left channel on occasion, but with a lot of help from our pal Goody, Rob’s DAT transfer has been pitch adjusted, aligned and cleaned up for what we hope is the best listening experience yet of this source. Mike himself only rated it “Good,” living up to the adage of being one’s own worst critic.

As for the performance, Yes fans love this tour, its setlist and frequently cite it as a shining era for Rick Wakeman. Fans of Topographic Oceans and Close To The Edge should be pleased.

Because Mike wouldn’t meet Jim until the following night, we don’t have our usual story, photos or ticket stub for the Forum show. But we’re so fortunate to have Mike’s recording. For those wondering, we do have the actual master cassettes for Long Beach ’74. In fact, Goody used that source to patch the end of “The Ancient” with Steve Howe’s acoustic guitar solo and Wakeman’s surging conclusion.

JEMS is proud to partner with Rob, Jim R and Barry G to release Millard’s historic recordings and to help set the record straight about the man himself.

We can’t thank Rob enough for reconnecting with Jim and putting his trust in our Millard reissue campaign. He kept these precious tapes under wraps for two decades, but once Rob learned of our methods and stewardship, he agreed to contribute the Millard DATs and cassettes to the program. Our releases would not be nearly as compelling without Jim’s memories and photos. As many of you have noted, the stories offer an entertaining complement to Mike’s incredible audio documents.

Special thanks to Goody for championing the release of this show and putting so much of his talent into the final release. He sets a high bar and we all benefit from it.

I can’t say enough about mjk5510, our critical collaborator for nearly all JEMS releases. Without his support, our Saturday release schedule simply would not happen.

Finally, cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone. His work never ceases to impress. May he rest in peace.

BK for JEMS

By Bill on Aug 6, 2020

  19. He upgraded to a Nakamichi 550 cassette recorder to capture Pink Floyd , Several Led Zeppelin shows in 75 and 77 , also several Rolling Stones shows from the LA Forum in 75

  20. Ludwig suck on my schwanz

By Snead on Aug 6, 2020

  21. I think Dan Lampinski and Mr Peach used the same recorder for their shows . It’s amazing that 45 years later these recordings , they still are the standard. Today’s audience tapes sound inferior despite modern technology.

By Bill on Aug 6, 2020

  22. How the fuck u know Bill

By Snead on Aug 6, 2020

  23. Mike the mic worked the LA / Long Beach area . Lampinski worked Providence and Boston , as did Steve Hopkins . Mr Freezer worked the New Orleans area . Mr Pesch , Japan . All legendary tapers.

By Bill on Aug 6, 2020

  24. David , derrick, Nelson Antichrist etc , More Black Ape violence erupts in a New Jersey staples store . Black ape female Terri Thomas arrested and charged with assault and battery after attacking a 55 year old white handicaped woman . She reportedly told the ape to wear her mask properly and cover her ape nose . The ape then threw her the floor breaking her leg and some ribs . Typical Black ape violent behavior.

By HHH on Aug 6, 2020

  25. This proves once again that you can take the ape out of the jungle , but you can’t take the jungle out of the ape. The Klan would have taken care of her in the old days , right David , Derrick ?

By HHH on Aug 6, 2020

  26. Right on triple h , the men in the white sheets would have tar and feather bathed her in the day . Fuckin coon bitch . You don’t do that shit to a white person

By Derrick on Aug 7, 2020

  27. Saw her picture . She looks like a motherfuckin gorilla

By Derrick on Aug 7, 2020

  28. HHH/Derrick I saw that. I posted the link to you guys the other day. Its a fuckin shame we cant live with these animals. They think different than we do. If theres a shortcut, the nigger will figure it out. if theres moneyto be made, the jew will figure it out. We need to go back to the days whites only, niggers only period. Racism is out there. Right below the surface.

By David Duke on Aug 7, 2020

  29. Derrick, I cant even watch sports anymore. Baseball is a joke. starting pitchers going 5 innings. cardboard cutouts. basketball with the black lives matter written on the court. fuck that. fuck lebron. only 1 michael jordan

By David Duke on Aug 7, 2020

  30. Poor widdle Derrick, crying about how things used to be. Those who live in the past are doomed to suffer in the present. Poor widdle HHH, constantly condemning a whole group of people for the actions of individuals. Wallow in your mud, boys. It’s fun watching you splash around.

By Mark on Aug 7, 2020

  31. Mark gives me a boner

By Snead on Aug 7, 2020

  32. Triple H gives me a boner

By Derrick on Aug 7, 2020

  33. Not me above . I can’t even get a boner

By Derrick on Aug 7, 2020

  34. Hebrew Mark approves of violent black ape behavior and culture . Big surprise.

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  35. Derrick, David, sports should just cancel 2020 , it’s a joke .

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  36. The nba in a bubble , just to say they completed the season . Any champion crowned this season will have an asterisk. Baseball with its 60 game season and multiple positive covid 19 cases . Just shut it all down already. It’s just about impatient greedy owners refusing to lose money .

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  37. Now the nfl is planning on playing with no fans in the stands , schools reopening, mask less students spreading covid . Humans can’t get out of their own way . People are insane .

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  38. 2020 should have just shut everything down and focused on returning to normal in 2021. Because of greed and impatience this thing will be here indefinitely.

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  39. triple h, does that mean it will never go away

By Derrick on Aug 7, 2020

  40. Yes Derrick, I just said that.

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  41. Last one not me

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  42. What I meant was that when the economy shut down in April, doctors and medical experts advised a longer time before reopening everything. Plus mandatory mask wearing . That way everything could have possibly be reopened safely. Our orange faced leader Trump along with his yes man Vice President Pence and brown nosing governors like Desantis and Kemp decided that politics were more important than public safety.

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  43. Also sports teams and leagues should have shut it down for the year as well , instead of the nba playing in a bubble and baseball playing a ridiculous 60 game season. Football also plans to play games with no fans . No bubble . Black ape athletes have no intelligence or will power . No way will they be able to stay away from bars , strip clubs and hoes .

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

  44. The only reason the nba has had some success so far is the bubble . They can leave Disney world . Left to their own devices those apes would all be hitting the clubs , banging the hoes , and spreading covid . The only reason that hasn’t happened is the bubble .

By HHH on Aug 7, 2020

    Two hundred and fifty men
    But only twenty-seven lived
    To walk back down again

Among the men who held it high
    Was the Indian, Ira Hayes
