THE WAR ON DRUGS
Carson 2018 [no label, 1CD]

KROQ Weenie Roast. Live at the StubHub Center, Carson, CA; May 12, 2018. Very good audio (ripped from HDTV webcast).

In August 2017, American indie band The War On Drugs released their fourth studio album, A Deeper Understanding, which won Best Rock Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. On March 21, 2020, frontman Adam Granduciel broadcast tentative versions of three new songs on his Instagram account.

It’s the rhythm that first defines most of the songs on A Deeper Understanding, with drum and bass interlocking for, say, a Creedence Clearwater Revival shamble, or a Tom Petty toe-tap. Once established, the groove is almost never interrupted - even as the song mutates for five, six, or 12 minutes. This is a technique most reminiscent of ’70s German rockers like Neu!, but also, structurally, of techno and house music. For Granduciel, it’s a way to achieve something novel and, perhaps counterintuitively, unpredictable. He told Vice, “I don’t like drums dictating the song; like when you hear a fill and then you know the chorus is coming up.” - theatlantic.com

  11. Rumor has it that the sensible few on this site will be spamming comments under my name to dilute my real posts about my favorite subject: male genitalia (which I cleverly refer to as “Uns”). Eventually the comment boards will be so full of fake comments with my name that you won’t even notice when I post my usual lovely insightful comment about the sizes of the bands’ “members” (see what I did there?). And then I’ll just fade away into obscurity. Oh well, it was fun (for me) while it lasted. Just like my last gay relationship which fell apart when he figured out that I would never leave the protection of my fake marriage and run away to Montserrat with him.

  19. So I should call you ED instead of DD.
