KRIS KRISTOFFERSON
New York 1999 [no label, 1CD]

Live on the
Vin Scelsa’s Idiot’s Delight radio show. WNEW-FM 102.7 New York. October 24, 1999. Very good FM broadcast.

Thanks to UrbanSurfer for sharing the show at Dime.

UrbanSurfer noted:

Many interviewers and fellow performers over the years have commented that Kris is amiable, generous with his time, warm and genuine. This session could go on the list for Exhibit A in support. The first two minutes of conversation will reveal why this man is accomplished and multi-faceted. You will hear the background on some iconic songs, cultural history, and a civics lesson in political activism. He has a distinct voice for storytelling that draws you in. The intimate song performances are a treat but the real gold is in the interview and conversation. Great stuff. The music tracks are the ones performed Live during this session. Highly recommended.

Notes below cut and pasted from radio host comments:

I started by playing the first three hit recordings of Kris’s songs - all recorded and released in 1970-71 by other artists. Kris released his first album in 1970. His visit tonight lasted almost two hours. He told some great stories from his long life and various careers - athlete, Rhodes Scholar, soldier and pilot, janitor, songwriter, film actor, political activist - with warmth, integrity, humor and a refreshing sense of unbridled decency and undying idealism. I’ve wanted to do radio with Kris for 30 years… this visit tonight lived up to all my expectations. A gem of a man… a true hero!

Sister Sinead - a new unrecorded song - he wasn’t even sure of the title - written about the night Sinead O’Connor was booed at Madison Square Garden during the Bob Dylan tribute concert; it was Kris who comforted her and told her “don’t let the bastards get you down” - not realizing he was on mike - a revealing and moving moment that I’ll always treasure having witnessed
Johnny Lobo - written for and about John Trudell
Dear Anna Lee - cover of a Hal Ketchum song

  4. I had the honor and privilege of meeting Mr. Kristofferson when he arrived a couple of hours before a club show a few years back. He was every bit the gentleman, and the show he put on that night was terrific.
