ROD STEWART
Inglewood 1977 [Mike Millard Master Tapes via JEMS, 1CD]

The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes Volume 48. Live at The Forum, Inglewood, CA; December 13, 1977. Incomplete show. Very good audience recording.

Thanks to Mike Millard; Rob, Jim R; Barry G; JEMS; BK; and mjk5510 for sharing the show at Dime.

Known Faults:
- Incomplete

Welcome to JEMS’ Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin done in and around Los Angeles circa 1975-77.

Until 2020, the Lost and Found series presented fresh transfers of previously unavailable first-generation copies made by Mike himself for friends like Stan Gutoski of JEMS, Jim R, Bill C. and Barry G. These sources were upgrades to circulating copies and in most instances marked the only time verified first generation Millard sources had been directly digitized in the torrent era.

That all changed with the discovery of many of Mike Millard’s original master tapes.

Yes, you read that correctly, Mike Millard’s master cassettes, long rumored to be destroyed or lost, have been found. Not all of them but many, and with them a much more complete picture has emerged of what Millard recorded between his first show in late 1973 and his last in early 1992.

The reason the rediscovery of his master tapes is such a revelation is that we’ve been told for decades they were gone. Internet myths suggest Millard destroyed his master tapes before taking his own life, an imprudent detail likely concocted based on the assumption that because his master tapes never surfaced and Mike’s mental state was troubled he would do something rash WITH HIS LIFE’S WORK. There’s also a version of the story where Mike’s family dumps the tapes after he dies. Why would they do that?

The truth is Mike’s masters remained in his bedroom for many years after his death in 1994. We know at least a few of Millard’s friends and acquaintances contacted his mother Lia inquiring about the tapes at the time to no avail. But in the early 2000s, longtime Millard friend Rob S was the one she knew and trusted enough to preserve Mike’s work.

Rod Stewart - The Forum, Inglewood, CA; December 13, 1977

Another Millard favorite, Rod Stewart, playing the first of two nights at The Forum. Mike was a Stewart fan going back to the Faces days. His fantastic recording of Rod with Faces from March 5, 1975 (Vol. 13 in our series) was in fact the very first show recorded with Mike’s legendary rig: the Nakamichi 550 cassette recorder and AKG 451-E microphones.

Two plus years later, Stewart’s solo career was soaring, which explains multiple shows at The Forum coming just a few weeks after the release of his solo album Foot Loose & Fancy Free which yielded the hit single “You’re In My Heart.” In researching these notes, I was surprised to learn that the song I associate most with this album, “Hot Legs,” was only a modest hit, peaking at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Opening the show and the entire US tour was Air Supply, an odd pairing to say the least, though it was Stewart himself who supposedly asked the duo to join him for the American leg after they had opened for him in their native Australia. Air Supply’s debut US album wouldn’t be released until the following year.

As Jim notes below, the show was recorded from Mike’s sweet spot and the recording is pure honey, rich, clear and thick. The only attribute missing is “complete.” For reasons lost to history, Mike only recorded a portion of the show, missing the start and cutting off before the full encore was completed. The total run time is only 55 mins, but what is there is excellent.

A clue that Mike may have had equipment problems is that he attended but did not record the second show on 12/14. There is a tape of the second show in his archive labeled “Copied by Mike Millard,” which is a distinct notation from how he typically labeled copies he made for others. Curiously the second night tape, perhaps made by a friend of Mike’s, is also incomplete, catching the start of the show but missing parts at the end. The night two recording sounds like a Millard master in terms of quality and location, but we’re still trying ascertain the provenance before sharing it.

Here’s what Jim R recalled about the Rod Stewart show:

I attended the Rod Stewart concert with Mike Millard on December 13, 1977. The concert took place at a very familiar place, The Forum. Mike’s equipment was smuggled in using the wheelchair. We sat in the 6th row dead center on the floor, definitely our “sweet spot.” The sound was typical Rod, with a little grit in it.

Stewart was on our “must attend” list as he always put on a great show. This night was no exception and featured a great set list. Mike and I also attended the show the following night, December 14. It was also recorded, though apparently not by Mike. It escapes me why we could only capture 55 minutes of the first show and who actually taped the second, also an incomplete recording. Of course these shows took place almost 43 years ago so please forgive us for not remembering every salient detail.

JEMS is proud to partner with Rob, Jim R, Barry G and others to release Millard’s historic recordings and to help set the record straight about the man himself. We’ve been fortunate to speak with a few additional people in recent months who knew Mike, and their recollections are expanding our picture of the man and his work. We look forward to sharing their stories.

We can’t thank Rob enough for reconnecting with Jim and putting his trust in our Millard reissue campaign. He kept Mike’s precious tapes under wraps for two decades, but once Rob learned of our methods and stewardship, he agreed to contribute the Millard DATs and cassettes to the program. Our releases would not be nearly as compelling without Jim’s memories, photos and other background contributions. As many of you have noted, the stories offer an entertaining complement to Mike’s incredible audio documents.

Once again, Goody contributed pitch approval on this one, a QC step for which we are most appreciative.

Post-production par excellence by mjk5510. Just when I think we are overburdening him he asks if he can help take on more transfer work. Thank you.

Finally, cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone. His work never ceases to impress. May he rest in peace.

BK for JEMS

  9. RIP Spencer Davis 81 died of Pneumonia in L.A. Monday Head of the 60’s Spencer Davis Group.

By ScarRad on Oct 21, 2020

  10. Hey DD , triple h , did you guys hear bout game one of the World Series. Dodgers vs Rays ? Dodgers won and Clayton Kershaw gets took out after 6 innings . No good reason for him to get taken out cept for the fact that that’s how they treat pitchers today . Like fuckin babies . Can you imagine Red Scoendiest takin Bob Gibson out after 6 in the World Series or Sandy Koufax bein taken out by Walt Alston , Whitey Ford by Casey Stengel ? Shit no way . The announcers made it sound like Kershaw actually did something special by goin 6 measly innings. That’s how far the down the standards has dropped

By Derrick on Oct 21, 2020

  11. Pitch counts , analytics, fuckin relief pitchers and substitutions , everybody swinging for the fences wit no small ball , stolen bases or strategy anymore has ruined baseball

By Derrick on Oct 21, 2020

  12. DD , where has all the coons gone in baseball too . That’s a sport that there used to be more black players. For some reason coons don’t like baseball no more . Baseball needs more coons . Football and basketball needs fewer of them monkeys

By Derrick on Oct 21, 2020

  13. Well said ScarRad (nice to know you’re still hanging in there! . . . here) As the Big O Newsletter mentions:

    SPENCER DAVIS R.I.P. 1939 - 2020

“Spencer Davis, one of the key figures of the 1960s beat scene, has died at the age of 81. Davis died in hospital on October 19, while being treated for pneumonia, his agent told the BBC. The Welsh guitarist was the driving force behind The Spencer Davis Group, who scored transatlantic hits with Keep On Running and Somebody Help Me. The band, which also featured a teenage Stevie Winwood, toured with The Who and The Rolling Stones in the ’60s. The Spencer Davis Group went on to prove they had songwriting chops of their own, with hit singles like I’m A Man and Gimme Some Lovin’, which was later covered by The Blues Brothers. He is survived by his long-time partner June, and three adult children.”

I imagine the guys at HQ will be scouring for some nice stuff by the band to post later maybe (I hope)

  14. Derrick, baseball moves too slow and isn’t hip hop enough for the black apes . In football they get to act like a pack of gorillas in the end zone after they score touchdowns. Did you watch the Dallas, Arizona game on Monday night ? Black apes acting like idiots , gyrating , doing vulgar dances after every play . They all act like morons . Same with basketball. Baseball dosent give them the platform to behave like they prefer to . Like jungle savages. It’s in their genes .

By HHH on Oct 21, 2020

  15. Derrick, DD , look at some of these black apes running around today . I swear it looks like incest is going on . Some ugly fucks to say the least . Eyes far apart , weird shaped heads etc . Black apes dip their poles in every hole they can find these days . Fathers and mothers screwing their kids and probably brother’s doing the same to sisters . That’s probably why so many black apes look deformed today . No family values anymore.

By HHH on Oct 21, 2020

  16. RIP Tony Lewis, 61, lead singer of Outfield cause not released. a good 80’s band”…I don’t want to lose your love tonight…”

By ScarRad on Oct 21, 2020

  17. Thankx Swappers. I am very ill. Victim of Xarelto blood thinner. This blood thinner is supposed to prevent blood clots. It caused two DVTs in my left leg, blocking 2 veins. If either clot breaks free, it could go to brain, heart or lung and be fatal or cause a brain bleed with same result. look up Xarelto lawsuits. End of 2019 they lost huge lawsuit. I had no idea. Since I already get brain strokes, about 4 a month, not good. please pray.

By ScarRad on Oct 21, 2020

  18. Swappers, it’s also causing one other side effect problem that it does. Unstopping bleeding I have several holes now in my left leg that they can’t top bleeding. They just keep rewrapping it.

By ScarRad on Oct 21, 2020

  19. Yeah, I watched the game. Bout time Kershaw pitched a decent game in the series. I agree the fuckin guy ha 8Ks and they take him out. Analytics is pure BS

By DD on Oct 21, 2020

  20. I said the other day that baseball is bein taken over by the cubans and the dominicans. Niggers cant do all that jive crap they do in football and basketball. When they swing from the rim, they look like apes swinging from a tree

By DD on Oct 21, 2020

  21. I miss the days when a starting pitcher pitched a full game if he was in the groove like kershaw was last nite. u know the expression what goes around comes around. Maybe we will get lucky b4 we take dirt naps

By DD on Oct 21, 2020

  22. Shut the FUCK up DD!! You don’t know SHIT.

By Derrick on Oct 21, 2020

  23. If anyone else is taking Xarelto and decides to stop, heed this warning DO NOT stop suddenly. you must go to your doctor and seek to transition over to a different blood thinner. If you suddenly stop on your own, it can kill you.

By ScarRad on Oct 21, 2020

  24. I know that was Bizarro Derrick aka Mark. Suck my schlong

By DD on Oct 21, 2020

  25. Rumor has it that I’m a penis sucker

  26. DD I swear that wasn’t me . More name highjackin queers

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  27. I know it wasnt you. Its that faggot Mark or U L E the cum guzzler

By DD on Oct 22, 2020

  28. The two of them should form a band called the spunkettes. Derrick/HHH did u hear bout that queer that started jackin off on a zoom mtg and everyone saw him with the lotion and tissues. ounds like something Mark would do

By DD on Oct 22, 2020

  29. Hey guys you may have seen that some of my tapes miss the beginning of some concerts. Reason for that is that me and the boys from JEMS used ta get a pre gig blow job in the parking lot. Sometimes it was from a girl but more often than not ot was a guy with a tiny coc,I think hos name was Derrick. Some nights one of the boys would shout BUKKAKE and noone could leave till everyone had shot their load on Derrick. Man sometimes there was so much jazz that the wheelchair handles were dripping.

By The Ghost of Mike Millard on Oct 22, 2020

  30. DD , Kershaw thru fewer than 70 pitches in 6 fuckin innings and they take him out . Max Kellerman called it a pitching masterpiece. That’s how far the standards has dropped

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  31. Bob Gibson averaged 130 pitches a game , most of em complete games . He won 251 regular season games and pitched 255 complete games . He completed more games than he won . Most of Sandy Koufax games was complete . He hardly ever was taken out . You can’t compare Kershaw to the old timers. Maybe it’s not their fault . Blame the managers today and analytics. It’s destroyed baseball

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  32. Kershaw was on pace to finish wit around 100 pitches if he was allowed to finish . His manager robbed him of what could have been a special moment . Fuckin analytics and the dumb asses who run the sport today . I hate relief pitchers

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  33. DD , to show you how stupid the young baseball reporters and so called experts is these days . A young baseball reporter was asked why pitchers can’t go 9 plus innings no more , get this , he said it was cause today’s lineups is so fierce and strong compared to the past and after going thru the lineups more than once or twice these hitters will have the pitchers figured out and take em out of the park . Can you believe that stupid theory?

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  34. Bob Gibson , Sandy Koufax and their peers had to face Willie Mays , Willie McCovey , Willie Stargell , Billy Williams , Hank Aaron , Ernie Banks , Roberto Clemente, Pete Rose , Tony Perez , Orlando Cepeda . They had to face em at the plate 4 or 5 times a game , cause they usually went the distance. No one in baseball today compares wit them guys

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  35. Heck ScarRad so sorry to hear that my friend. Thats sounds truly awful and my best wishes and thoughts go out to you. Hope they can try to do more for you.

By swappers on Oct 22, 2020

  36. By that young reporters theory . Gibson , Koufax and company would last 6 innings today cause they would have been takin out

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  37. Back in 1970 I saw Gibson strike out Willie McCovey 5 straight times in one game . Cardinals vs Giants , game of the week on NBC . Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek callin the game . Gibson struck out 13 in 10 innings. Think Cards won 3 to 1 . Ron Hunt a slap hitter got the only run off Gibson wit a solo homer

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  38. Think Gibby thru over a 150 pitches that game . He was interviewed on the field and said he didn’t have his best stuff as he walked 5 or 6 batters in the first 5 innings before he settled down . He would have been taken out after 3 innings today by these stupid analytics managers

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  39. Gibson and Koufax , Seaver, Carlton , Palmer , Marichal, all them great pitchers , they all said that they would rather face a slugger like a McCovey or Stargell that these little slap , singles hitters . Guess what , that’s all you got today . Sluggers swinging for the fences . No small ball or stolen bases no more . Gibson , Koufax , Seaver would average 20 strikeouts a game today if they pitched . Hitters was smarter and more selective back in the day . A strikeout meant more back then cause you had to earn it . Hitters today don’t care how much they strike out . Back then it was something to be embarrassed about . Look at how few times Joe DiMaggio struck out in his career

By Derrick on Oct 22, 2020

  40. todays world series is a joke. your comparing todays lil leaguers to the pros of the past

By DD on Oct 22, 2020

By HHH on Oct 22, 2020

I wish that Derrick, you and I could get girlfriends.

By HHH on Oct 23, 2020

  55. Hey triple h, couldn’t agree more with you. I would love a good girlfriend but the chicks don’t seem to like me. Don’t know why?

By DD on Oct 23, 2020

  60. Just looking at my last comment again I realize that I am just a big hypocrite as I type racist comments nearly ever day, like DD and Derrick, and sometimes Nelson. Now, that must be a crime for which I deeply apologise.
