Eddie Van Halen, guitarist in Van Halen, has died after battling throat cancer. The 65-year-old passed away October 6 according to his son Wolfgang. In a statement, Wolfgang, who plays bass in the band, wrote on Twitter: “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”
Van Halen was formed in 1972 with Eddie, his brother drummer Alex Van Halen, Mark Stone and David Lee Roth. Van Halen’s mother was born in Rangkasbitung, Java, in Indonesia. The single “Jump” became the band’s first and only No. 1 pop hit in 1984.
