THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO
Verona 1989 [Inner Voice: Jazz Masters Volume 23, 1CD]

Live at the Teatro Romano, Verona, Italy; June 25, 1989. Very good soundboard.

Thanks to mjk5510 for sharing the show at Dime.

mjk5510 noted:

Recently receiving a batch of new shows, we are happy to return to our continuing series “Inner Voice: Jazz Masters”.

Volume 23 features an excellent soundboard of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago recorded as part of the 1989 Verona Jazz Festival.

The Art Ensemble Of Chicago is an avant-garde jazz group that grew out of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in the late 1960s. The ensemble integrates many jazz styles and plays many instruments, including “little instruments”: bells, bicycle horns, birthday party noisemakers, wind chimes, and various forms of percussion. This combined with occasionally wearing costumes and face paint make the ensemble’s performances both aural and visual.

Firmly trenched in avant-garde, this show touches many Jazz genres throughout the two long compositions. Challenging? Yes. Boring? Never. As Roscoe Mitchell tells the audience at the end of the show, “blues, jazz, rock or reggae, folk, avant-garde, free, classical or bebop, swing… call it whatever you like, blues, anything… we call it great black music from the ancient to the future”. We could not agree more.

Thanks to our anonymous benefactor, we are in their debt for the continued great releases and without them none of this would exist.
