Oddities Vol 1 [His Master’s Choice HMC 015, 2CD]
Mix of demos, outtakes and live tracks. Very good soundboard.
Vol 1 is “A real treat for the fanatic Lennon connoisseur” says the subhead on the cover. Here are demos of what might be described by the compiler as “his fave Lennon songs” from the first solo to the final Lennon album. It includes three tracks from Lennon’s Come Together show in NYC in 1971. All seem to be from master quality sources and sound excellent.

Another commendable version of outtakes and, yes, oddities, scrimped together from various locations. While it’s aim is true, the focus zig – zags between the various parts of John’s solo career. While this is hopefully not the last of the Lennon rarities that HMC bring us (The fact that we still have artifacts on vinyl that haven’t made it to this release is an open signal ) then it almost looks certain that we won’t be getting any more complete recording sessions coming our way any time soon.

I also got the sad news of Johns murder from Monday Night Football. I think the game was Dolphins Patriots, but I’m not sure . I know Miami was one of the teams . Howard Cosell broke the news . I do remember that it was very late in the game , almost midnight on the east coast. I had just walked in the door , after having been out having a few drinks with friends . When I heard I thought someone had spiked my drinks with acid . Unbelievable. Not John Lennon. This stung me for well over two years .

I remember the album double fantasy had just been released. He had two singles out back to back , starting over and Woman . I think Woman was number two on billboards top 40 for like two months straight. It was kept from the top spot by REO Speedwagons Keep on Lovin you . Woman was a very sad song in light of when it was released, Basically Johns song of love for Yoko.

I too remember when double fantasy came out . Every Lennon song would be followed by one of yokos. It was maddening. I certainly didn’t want to hear Yoko , only John . This was before CDs . I remember recording the album onto a cassette tape with only Johns songs . Both of the top beatles, John and Paul had to get those women Linda and Yoko involved in everything they did . It was maddening.
