JEFF BECK
Lucca 2010 [no label, 1CD]
Live at the Piazza Napoleone, Lucca Summer Festival, Lucca, Italy, July 13, 2010. Very good FM broadcast.
Jeff Beck sure knows how to pick his bassists. Earlier on, it was Australian Tal Wilkenfeld, who had been with Beck’s group since 2008 and played on Beck’s latest album, Emotion And Commotion. She had to pull out of Beck’s current tour because of scheduling problems and to replace her is funky bassist Rhonda Smith, who is no stranger to Prince fans.
Unlike Frank Zappa (when he was alive) or even Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band with their deep live catalogue, Beck live doesn’t offer that wide a variety. However, he makes up for it with intricate and passionate playing. For this gig and for the current tour, the presence of Rhonda Smith certainly helps - she really spikes up the tunes and her vocals aren’t too bad.
Beck may be promoting Emotion And Commotion but there are always dependable chestnuts such as Stratus, Led Boots, A Day In The Life and People Get Ready - he left out Over The Rainbow, which he covered on the album.
Solid and dependable, Jeff Beck won’t disappoint anyone, especially his fans, but it would be nice if he could surprise them as well… even once in a while.
Thanks to survivor69 who taped the show and shared the lossless tracks on Dime. survivor69 commented: “On Italian radio, the DJ speaks a lot in-between songs. And I mean a lot. His/her purpose is to introduce songs with bits of bio, or translate what the artists say. It may get VERY annoying and, trust me, it does, thus we might consider this recording ONLY FOR COMPLETISTS. But the songs, the actual music, are (usually) not spoken over. It has to be noted that Italian DJs are advised to talk that much by the record companies to prevent bootlegging.”
Also, thanks to rockitaly for the artwork.

I’ll have to say that I’m a bit out of touch with many of Jeff Beck’s recent releases. I still admire him and I’ll always think of him as a true innovator — not to say genius. He was experimenting feedback, distortion and other stuff before Hendrix. Still an astonishing player even when the material is sometimes… huh…
Anyway, let’s try for that Lucca (!!!) gig and discover how he treated the Italian audience!
