Ian Carr Celebration - Nucleus Revisited [no label, 1CD]
Live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, UK, February 23, 2010, broadcast on Radio 3 Jazz Line Up on April 23/24 2010. Excellent FM stereo.
“In celebration of the hugely respected hero of British jazz, who died last February, this concert features a re-formed edition of Carr’s seminal electric band, Nucleus; the London premiere of ‘Northumbrian Sketches’ with soloist Guy Barker and string ensemble conducted by Mike Gibbs; plus Michael Garrick with a group evocative of his collaborations with Ian Carr in the 1960s. Norma Winstone, Ray Russell, John Marshall and Tim Whitehead will be among many leading British jazz stars taking part. All proceeds went to the Alzheimers Society.” - The press release.
About the time electric rock entered jazz with Miles Davis, Ian Carr started England’s pioneer jazz-rock band, Nucleus, in 1969. They recorded as a unit until 1972 then fragmented as Nucleus became a band with whoever Carr played. Among their career highlights was Nucleus winning best band at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969.
For this concert, guests John Marshall and Ray Russell made rare appearances. Marshall was a founder member of Nucleus. Russell was a Nucleus alumnus in the ’70s. Some of the music played comes from 1979’s Out Of The Long Dark album. Carr’s compositions for Nucleus stayed at the center neither swerving to world music nor straying too deep into the avant garde branch.
The most important thing to remember when listening to Carr’s music is his belief that jazz was not the sole proprietorship of Americans.
Big thanks to 6135terry for sharing the FM broadcast on Dime and fastone for the artwork.
