What a thrill it was to be the opening act at the Bijou Theatre for Big Ears Festival 2022! The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra helped begin the festivities with Caroline Shaw’s otherworldly “Entr’acte”, then the great Shabaka Hutchings wowed a packed and enthusiastic crowd with Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto. We wrapped up our set with Copland’s entracing “Appalachina Spring” Suite, because being in Knoxville, how could we not?? So grateful for all the musicians who performed so beautifully and the backstage staff for guiding us through an intense day.

I didn’t realize it until after the fact, but the rest of my Thursday was given to other strains of American music, starting at The Bijou, where the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performed a wonderful Caroline Shaw piece, Entr’acte, before moving into Aaron Copland’s concerto for clarinet, strings, and harp, with London’s Shabaka Hutchings on clarinet. Shabaka Hutchings is a British jazz saxophonist, clarinettist and band leader. He leads the bands Sons of Kemet and Shabaka and the Ancestors. He is also a member of The Comet Is Coming, performing under the stage name King Shabaka. Hutchings has played saxophone with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Floating Points, Mulatu Astatke, Polar Bear, Melt Yourself Down, Heliocentrics and Zed-U.
