JOHN STEWART
Sweetwater 1990 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Sweetwater, Mill Valley, CA; November 1, 1990. Very good soundboard.

Thanks to grner1 for sharing this new transfer at Dime.

grner1 noted:

Excellent sound quality soundboard cassette master. Very nice set with Dave Batty on bass and John’s wife Buffy Ford Stewart doing backing vocals on a few songs.

Many masters have been left with me to share when I have time to transfer them. This is one of those recordings. THANKS to David Hardy for mix and source tapes and to Professor Goody for verifying the pitch. Please support the artists and live venues any way that you can. Enjoy and SHARE!

You won’t easily come by a live John Stewart performance as good as this. It’s the early and late show on two CDs and is better than the official 1991 live album, Neon Beach. Stewart covers his solo years and includes the popular Daydream Believer, made a hit by The Monkees, and his own Top 5 hit, Gold. A brief medley of 500 Miles and Where Have All The Flowers Gone covers his period with The Kingston Trio.

His voice is still in good shape. Listen to California Bloodlines. In his later years, it was not as pristine. The description singer-songwriter describes Stewart best. Although not a hitmaker, Stewart was prolific, pushing out over 50 albums in his lifetime, some through his own record label. Stewart died in 2008. He wrote socially-relevant songs, love songs, topical songs and personal songs. Dreamers On The Rise and Cody, both sung with his wife Buffy Ford, was from his self-released 1985 album The Last Campaign, an album that covers the presidential campaign of Robert Kennedy. Stewart and his wife, Buffy Ford, were part of that campaign, following Kennedy everywhere and performing on stages at the rallies.

The theme of dreams pervades his entire repertoire. Nanci Griffith covered his Sweet Dreams Will Come. Daydream Believer is sung here as non-pop as possible. The lyrics (”Our good times starts and end/without dollar one to spend/but how much do we really need”) lend themselves very well to Stewart’s heartfelt style. It’s probable Stewart never imagined Daydream Believer as a pop song but one about hope. Stewart was one of those positive individuals who never surrendered. He toured regularly, was prolific and had a passion for painting and writing. Even the in-between song dialogue is interesting. Listen to Stewart talk about how he wrote Runaway Fool Of Love for Elvis. It was ignored by Elvis, who Stewart has said he met twice…
