HIROMI - THE PIANO QUINTET
Switzerland 2022 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Théâtre de L’octogone, Lausanne, Switzerland; November 2, 2022. Very good satellite broadcast.

Thanks to unclewolfi for sharing the show at Dime.

Hiromi is joined by an extraordinary string quartet, together they form The Piano Quintet, “a vessel that propels Hiromi’s piano heroics into the stratosphere”. Hiromi’s Silver Lining Suite album was recorded in pandemic isolation and released in the fall of 2021. It pairs Hiromi’s virtuosic and emotive piano playing with a string quartet assembled by violinist Tatsuo Nishie, concertmaster of the New Japan Philharmonic.

“Drawing on European classical forms, the music is highly melodic, intricately arranged, emotionally intense, and unmistakably born from the mind of an intrepid improviser. Interacting with the strings, she attacks the piano with all the dynamism and unbridled energy that’s marked her music from the beginning. The suite evokes the whipsawed pandemic experience, from the initial shock and despair as the world shut down to the relief and welcome connection provided by the technology-facilitated silver lining of livestream performance. The results blur the lines between classical music and jazz, crafting a vibrant hybrid with the fervent, rock-inspired energy and cinematic beauty that Hiromi instills in her music.”
