If Georgia O’Keeffe was still living at her Ghost Ranch summer house on Friday night (Sept 9), she’d hear the sounds of Patti Smith, oracular Priestess – Godmother of Punk – wailing at the full moon… “We shall live again We shall live again (We shall live again) Shake out the ghost dance (We shall live)…”

The two artists may have gotten along, at least in conversation, both fiercely private, choosing almost monastic lives dedicated to their craft, prolific in their medium, rule breakers, they shared the unique distinction of having been muse to  famous photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Robert Mapplethorpe.

O’Keeffe was intrigued with “the idea that music could be translated into something for the eye,” and the artist most associated with the Modernist and Abstract movements in visual art - kept her home-vinyl collection stocked with primarily classical music of the 18th and 19th centuries Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Schumann, while Smith has always looked to 18th and 19th Century literary classics for inspiration.

In spirit at least, the two meet through the timelessness of their respective work.

There is pristine wilderness surrounding the town established in 1744 on the sacred site of an abandoned Tiwa Pueblo. The hills are rich in pottery shards, and the celestial phenomenon settles differently in Abiquiú. The sun lingers on the Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks, shifting to a gentle twilight, and although the sun blazes after dawn, the light is never predictable. The moon on Friday night, waxing gibbous, and 98 per cent full - will be spectacular.

The lineup this weekend’s Ladder To The Moon Festival is being promoted as “an intimate concert experience under a full moon in the heart of the iconic landscape that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe.”
