JEFF BECK R.I.P. 1944 - 2023
Jeff Beck, the beloved guitar player who rose to fame with English rock band The Yardbirds, has died on January 10. He was 78. His family confirmed Beck’s death in a statement on Wednesday. “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s Passing,” the statement began. “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”
Beck rose to fame in 1965 when he took over as guitarist for The Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton. The next year, he founded his own group, The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. They released two albums together: Truth and Beck-Ola. After The Jeff Beck Group broke up, he joined Vanilla Fudge for a short stint and later recreated The Jeff Beck Group with new members. In 1972, he fronted Beck, Bogert & Appice before breaking up in 1974.
He also recorded two albums in the ’70s as a solo act called Blow by Blow and Wired. He released Loud Hailer in 2016. “I really wanted to make a statement about some of the nasty things I see going on in the world - greed, lies, injustice - and I loved the idea of being at a rally and using this loud device to shout my point of view,” he said in a bio on his official website. Most recently, the rocker released a collaborative album titled 18 with Johnny Depp in July 2022. - people.com
Often described as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Beck - whose fingers and thumbs were famously insured for £7m – was known as a keen innovator. He pioneered jazz-rock, experimented with fuzz and distortion effects and paved the way for heavier subgenres such as psych rock and heavy metal over the course of his career. He was an eight-time Grammy winner, recipient of the Ivor Novello for outstanding contribution to British music and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a solo artist and as a member of the Yardbirds.
Musicians and longtime friends began paying tribute minutes after the news broke. On Twitter, Jimmy Page wrote, “The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans.”
“With the death of Jeff Beck we have lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world,” Mick Jagger wrote. “We will all miss him so much.”
“Now Jeff has gone, I feel like one of my band of brothers has left this world, and I’m going to dearly miss him,” Ronnie Wood tweeted.
Ozzy Osbourne tweeted, “I can’t express how saddened I am to hear of Jeff Beck’s passing. What a terrible loss for his family, friends & his many fans. It was such an honour to have known Jeff and an incredible honor to have had him play on my most recent album.” - theguardian.com
In July 2022, Beck released a collaborative album with Johnny Depp titled 18. “It’s an extraordinary honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the true greats and someone I am now privileged enough to call my brother,” Depp said in a release at the time.

Blues… Rock and roll… Rockabilly… Jazz… Jazz rock…Heavy metal…. If he has not invented everything, at least, a whole lot! Don’t know what to say about Jeff, so here’s a little fun story instead: A long long time ago, one sad evening at the Red Lion (whose real color is green!), a great pub near Subutex Street, I met a dumb girl who said I was looking like Jeff Beck!
— You mean, Blues Deluxe or rock at the jailhouse?
She didn’t know what to reply. ah, these people only looking at reviews and never listening to records properly… As I left softly but surely, she promised me to listen with more attention. Probably did ever since, unless she’s still doing parties de billards while drinking heavily… That ain’t the way to do it.
