I had to see Blondie and I had to hear “Rapture,” and I got to do both, joined by a vocal and enthusiastic crowd of my peers, some chanting “Doctor!”, “Doctor!” for the band’s legendary drummer Clem Burke, known as the “Doctor of Rock.” Noticeably absent Friday night was band co-founder Chris Stein, to whom Debbie Harry sent good wishes from the stage. The band’s amazing guitarist Tommy Kessler covered for Chris and played his usual masterful licks in a memorable display of technique on the frets.
The crowd responded enthusiastically to “Call Me,” “The Tide is High,” “Heart of Glass,” and yes, “Rapture,” during the 1.5-hour set that also included newer music from their recent album, Pollinator. As she sang, “Do you love me now?” the crowd made it very clear: “Yes!”
