BOB DYLAN
Ten Of Swords (Disc 4/5) [Tarantula, 10LP/7CD]
Outtakes, live and unreleased tracks.
Bobsboots.com calls Ten Of Swords “the most famous Bob Dylan bootleg of all time”. This 10-LP set (134 tracks, over eight hours of music) of Dylan material from 1961 to 1966 was rushed out in the summer of 1985, shortly before the release of Biograph later that autumn.
Bobsboots.com also added: “The biggest problem is that most people who would like to have a copy of it, don’t. The restrictive price of the set, and the rare occurrence of it ever being for sale, severely limits the availability.”
But copies of the set were shared as cassettes and later as CD-Rs (occupying seven CDs).
Since then, tracks from Ten Of Swords have been officially released and a big word of thanks to Philip Cohen for providing the lowdown.
Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.
These tracks are no longer available for download.

The version of “Rocks & Gravel” on Disc 4 is from the “Gaslight Tapes” recordings. The version on “Disc 5″ is the Columbia Studios outtake from the “Freewheelin’ ” sessions.

Classic post. Reminds me that I once owned the 20-LP white vinyl “Dylan” box, which I sold through a Goldmine auction to a gent in New York in the pre-eBay world.
Thanks for the sounds and the memories!

I love that Gaslight disc. I can’t believe it’s deleted. It’s a superb recording. The running order here is a little different. Great post.

WHY NOT OMIT THE ENTIRE THING???
By Phil Winans on Oct 29, 2010
One more thing … most of us who would cherish this one already own all the Bootlegs series and Gaslight releases … omitting them here does rather spoil the idea of having the Ten of Swords in our collections. So, there!

I respect the fact that officially released tracks are omitted. I just plug-in the omitted tracks myself to make it complete if that’s important to me and if I have them. These are easy for Dylan fans. Sometimes I don’t have them — but I can live with that. I’m just thankful for the music!

What Swappers said.
Look at the time put into posting these, look at the effort to get it all accurate, look at the gift of the internet to give us what we had to search through cities to find and lay down major bucks for, and here it is all presented for our enjoyment, free, so that all we have to do is right click and give thanks.

I’m with Mainer. My attitude toward all this wonderful music is total gratitude.
I’m on a trip of discovery with all these songs.
Some of them are just a little bit ‘raw,’ but that’s almost the same as being ‘rare.’

The 10 of Swords stuff was great, better sound quality of versions I’d had a long time ago. Thank you.

Thanks a lot for sharing this and so precisely name tracks and their origins in the introduction text. Appreciated. I will fill in the gaps using the official sources. Can’t wait to receive my order of the latest bootleg series.

Truly selfless gift! Hard work, and nothing in return? Yes, I second my friends who wrote before me. Simply a lot of thanks and respects for this good human.

Philip has come through again. I have the Gaslight sessions and, as mentioned previously, they are terrific. Thanks to everyone associated with this posting as the original discs were so hard to find.
