HALLOGALLO 2010
Michael Rother, Steve Shelly, Aaron Mullan
New York 2010 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Lincoln Center Out Of Doors Festival, New York City, NY; August 6, 2010. Very good soundboard, sourced from audio stream.

From Kraftwerk to Neu! and now Hallogallo 2010, German experimental musician and composer Michael Rother has teamed up with drummer Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and bassist Aaron Mullan (Tall Firs) to form a new group playing Neu!’s electronic rock music live for the first time in 35 years.

As culture.wnyc.org describes it, “Neu!’s sound is built around a relentless driving 4/4 beat known as the motorik (the literal translation is “motor skill”), the aural equivalent of euphorically speeding down the Autobahn. Atop this hypnotic and eminently danceable beat floats Rother’s heavily processed guitar and ambient electronics that sound like a rocket ship bound for the astral plane, a water drip or tape loops backward.” That is precisely how the opening, self-titled track comes across - perfect for that drive along that expressway to your skull.

Or as Matlin commented on the internet: “Rother is one of the great, mostly unsung, guitar heroes. His solo albums are timeless instrumental works that feel to me like the Shadows and the Ventures refracted through a post-Hendrix-Kraut-Avant prism.”

Racy and absorbing, and with Shelley keeping perfect time, it will be a surprise if this isn’t the next thing to go into your iPod.

  3. according to the wnyc site that actually did the brdcst itself the only track after veteranissimo is dino. i recorded the feed from the site itself and it comes out to just under 61mins. i know that this show was very much abbreviated from the other shows that they would do on the actual tour which i didnt get to see. the shows that they charged admission for were only $20 and they went to columbus and chicago. i wasnt in columbus when they went there altho i live only blocks from where they played and i couldnt get to the chicago show altho its an hour from where i am actually staying. the show was listed as being at 9pm but they dont get on stage til 1030pm. that made it impossible for me to attend. the reviews afterwards said that the shows were the event of the year. i have actually looked forward to seeing rother in one form or another for 35 yrs on stage. id love to have a full show from this tour. but a big thanks to bigo anyway for providing this one to those who didnt have it.
if anyone wants more info on this check out–

btw-there is a 7 inch single out there now with two songs that they have released totalling just under 11mins. the two songs are Blinkgürtel and Drone Schlager. i think they sell them at the gigs. im sure there are other ways to get these. i found mine online and downloaded it. i have no idea where tho. it was purely by accident.
theres also a box set with approximately 42 trax by neu! i highly recommend this for krautrock fans.
