Off The Walls (Summer Of 1974) [Masterfraction MCFD 005, 1CD]

Alternate mixes and sessions. Very good soundboard.

Interesting to note that John Lennon’s 1974 album, Wall And Bridges, didn’t get a glowing review in The Rolling Stone Record Guide (1979):

Both Mind Games (1973) and Walls And Bridges (1974) were drastic retreats from the anti-pop stance of Some Time In New York City (1972), and both produced hits: Mind Games, the trendy Whatever Gets You Thru The Night and #9 Dream. The sound was lush and conventional, the singing assured, but there was no real point of view at work - no point at all, in fact, save for continuing a career for its own sake; only Going Down On Love recalled the gutty realisim of John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band which seemed very far away.

Like so many veterans of the ’60s trapped by the ’70s, Lennon (by then the subject of a brutal but accurate parody on the National Lampoon’s Radio Dinner LP) had no idea of how to relate to his audience: with what appeared to be panic, he substituted production techniques for soul, building a bridge to his listeners with his sound but erecting a wall around himself with empty music.

Today, for Lennon and Beatles fans, it’s quite impossible to think of a world without the Walls And Bridges album.

  2. “Walls and Bridges” is much more than Lennon’s attempt to “continue his career for its own sake”.

There’s a continuity to it, even if it represents a different phase than Plastic Ono Band, and it’s anything but “empty music”.

I do agree with the final comment….it’s impossible to think of a world without Walls and Bridges.

    Thanks for sharing it.

  3. Any record that contains a masterpiece such as “#9 Dream” has value.

  4. Poor John Lennon … he was, for once, led astray rather than leading the way. Thanks for letting me hear this one. Cheers and Happy Christmas to everyone out there …

  5. Thanks again, bigO! John obviously loved Yoko even if the rest of the world would rather have not heard from her on his albums….

  6. I agree with KENW, any album with “#9 Dream” on it can’t be dismissed in the way Rolling Stone did with it.

For me, this is my favorite Lennon album….and the new 2010 remaster sounds superb!

You CANNOT tell me that “Nobody Loves You When You’re Down And Out” isn’t a statement!?!?!?!

  7. Hello Todd. “You CANNOT tell me that “Nobody Loves You When You’re Down And Out” isn’t a statement!?!?!?!”

It is a wonderful statement of truth. It goes back some decades. For instance, listen to it by JANIS JOPLIN 1962_70 Box Set (track 205)
Blow All My Blues Away [no label, 9CD]
Various dates, 1962 through 1970. or This is Janis - 1965. She wrings it out from the bitter soul, in her audition to Big Brother.

To fit the current season, the closest followers of Jesus either turned Him in to be executed, abandoned Him, fell asleep while on watch while He prayed, or denied knowing Him. He forgives.

  8. Sorry Todd. Lyrics are quite different, had difficulty hearing them. Still fits the Jesus analogy on the last line, Everybody loves you when you’re six feet under!
That’s more than a statement, it’s bloody PROPHETIC! and again, the dastardly deed was done by a professed close follower, like Judas.

  9. I didn’t like the album when I first heard it but a few years ago I gave it another chance and it’s great. I was a teen when I first heard it so I probably wasn’t mature enough to understand it. I love it now and #9 Dream is a masterpiece.
