THE ROLLING STONES
Voodoo Residue [Vigotone 156/157, 2CD]

Voodoo Lounge demos and outtakes. Bootlegzone noted that these were pre-production rehearsals recorded in Barbados, Nov-Dec 1993. Very good soundboard.

This two-CD Vigotone release was the sequel to the two four-CD boxes “Voodoo Stew” and “Voodoo Brew”. It’s for hardcore Stones fans. - Philip Cohen

Here’s what the UK Uncut magazine commented on Voodoo Lounge, the 1994 Rolling Stones album that won a Grammy for Best Rock Album:

Times and fashions change, essentially, but the Rolling Stones do not. In the five years that would elapse before their next album in 1994 – post grunge, post MTV Unplugged, even post Rick Rubin’s work with Johnny Cash – there prevailed the kind of stripped-down modernity that sat well with the Stones. Voodoo Lounge, in fact… finds the Stones reconciled with their past in ways that are thrilling (fantastic opener “Love Is Strong”, all slinky riffing and harp), and surprising (harpsichord weepie “New Faces” seems to reference “As Tears Go By”). Occasionally, however, the surprise tips over into actual shock. Generally a master of innuendo, on “Sparks Will Fly” (“I want to fuck your sweet ass”) Jagger simply provides too much information.

As for Voodoo Residue, this was posted at rollingstonesnet.com:

It’s been two years since the release of “Voodoo Stew” and one might ask what could possibly be left from the “Voodoo Lounge” sessions? The answer is tracks that are the most primal beginnings of what would become “Voodoo Lounge” that have surfaced to date. This could be a very interesting manifestation to some, but for most these tracks are in their infancy. They are on par with the likes of “hotel room” tapes that have come out over the years. Simple chord progressions and rambling and/or mumbling for lyrics.

For the “hard core” these are rare glimpses into the early creative processes between the Glimmer Twins… Jagger/Richards work very differently from one another as these and many other recordings reveal, but together they make music that they are not capable of producing on their own. The sound quality of “Voodoo Residue” is what we have come to expect from this “trilogy” of releases… crystal clear DATs from the mixing board.”

Thanks to Phil for sharing the tracks.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.

  7. Ever wanted to sit in the studio and listen to Keith, Mick and Charlie sketch out some songs during the “Voodoo Lounge” sessions? Of COURSE you did! Who the hell wouldn’t??? Well, here’s your chance. Pristine DAT tape sources.

Had this CD for years and though it’s definitely “for fans only”, there’s some very nice jams and works in progress. Also, this - along with with the VDoo-”Stew” and “Brew” has some of the BITCHENEST cover art and booklet design! FAR superior to the legit Voodoo Lounge album art. Whoever made this happen (Vigotone), it was a clear labor of love and larceny. And we are richer for it.

I THINK at least Keith would approve.

  22. Jeff - total guess here ;) but - that could be because it is a 7 year old post?
Not sure how you got you to any of it, because my understanding was the old posts are not active at all (part of the cash crisis because too few people are willing to donate for the goodies offered)
If you emailed management they MIGHT be able/willing to reactivate those for you - especially if you are a donor.
    worth a try I guess.
