Venus And Mars Outtakes Are Alright Tonight [No Pig, 2CD]

The sound is slightly rough on Disc One. Sound on Disc Two is very good.

What does one do as a follow-up to 1973’s Band On The Run, arguably Paul McCartney And Wings’ best album? Even a master tunesmith such as McCartney must falter sometimes. While no one would complain about Listen To What The Man Said being the first single (possibly the catchiest song on 1975’s Venus And Mars), other standout songs might include the title track, Letting Go and the anthemic Rock Show.

Possibly based on the good vibes left over from Band On The Run, Venus And Mars did respectable business and what helped to seal the deal was the Wings Over The World tour which started in September 1975 with stops in the UK, Australia, the US and Canada where Venus And Mars songs were heavily featured.

According to the sleeve, this music was culled from sessions that took place between January and April 1975, first at Sea Saint Studios, New Orleans, and later at Wally Heider Studios in Los Angeles. The music was culled from sessions that took place between January and April of 1975, first at Sea Saint Studios, New Orleans and later at Wall Heider Studios in LA.

According to the, The 910 (a key publication on unreleased Beatles recordings) states that someone who worked on the session hung onto a low bias cassette dub of some early takes and some later more polished remixes. This is the source of this CD.

  2. This is beautiful in its awfulness–this is a guilty pleasure. All you have to do to understand why The Beatles broke up is to imagine John Lennon’s reaction to these songs…

  12. I like the demo of Rock Show. McCartney still had his vocal range. Jimmy McCullough was a good guitarist even when he was younger in Thunderclap Newman, but his slide playing sounds horrible to me like fingernails on a blackboard.

  14. It was June 1976 Opening Night at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, CA (as Chick Hearn of the Los Angeles Lakers put it), when my fianc√© and I saw WINGS OVER AMERICA perform. Still have the programs. Cher and Elton front row. Dozen encores. Lasers shooting towards the back wall above our heads. Sgt Pepper marching around the round Forum outside. 3 limos with dark windows…They didn’t let us in until the DC8 jet flew over the top of the Forum, perfectly timed with “JET!” the opening number. AND the big surprise at the end… Ringo walks out from behind the stage with a dozen roses, gives them to Cher, grabs a guitar, does a rock guitar pose, as if ready to play, gives the guitar back to the roadie, turns around and gives Paul a big hug, they turn around, put their arms over each other’s shoulders, and walk straight back off the stage.
