MILES DAVIS
Complete Stockholm 1960 [Dragon DRCD 228, 4CD]

Live at Stockholm’s Concert Hall, Sweden; March 22 and October 13, 1960. Very good Pre-FM Swedish Radio Broadcasts.

Since it appeared in 1992, this four-CD set has been widely shared among Miles fans. Scott Yanow of allmusic.com commented:

This remarkable four-CD set features John Coltrane with the Miles Davis Quintet just a short time before ‘Trane went out on his own. Davis sounds inspired by his star tenor and although Coltrane was reportedly bored with the repertoire (”On Green Dolphin Street,” “All Blues,” “Fran-Dance,” “Walkin’” and two versions of “So What”), he is at his most explorative throughout this often-stunning music. In addition, the rhythm section (pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb) had been together for two years and is really tight.

It is surprising that Miles did not have much to say about the 1960 European tour in his Autobiography, where he focused on London:

The 1960 European tour was the first time I had come to London, I think, and the concerts there were packed every night… They were calling me arrogant, saying that I didn’t like the way the English talk, that I had bodyguards to protect me, when in fact the only people who went with me besides the members of the band were [Miles’ first wife] Frances and [lawyer and friend] Harold Lovett. They said I didn’t like white people; all kinds of shit. And then somebody told me that if you’re famous that’s the way the English press does you. After that, I relaxed. After England we went on to Sweden and Paris and then back to the States to finish up our tour.”

Thanks to the person who shared the tracks on the net in 2004.

Artwork includes very informative notes by Jan Lohmann, author of The Sound of Miles Davis: The Discography 1945 - 1991.

From wikipedia:

In the movie Jerry Maguire, the concert referred to with Miles Davis and John Coltrane is the Dragon release. It can also be noted that this recording is incorrectly referred to as a bootleg in Eric Nisenson’s John Coltrane biography Ascension: John Coltrane and his quest.

The company was revived in mid 1999 to 2002 for Sisqo’s albums.

Miles Davis released Kind Of Blue in 1959. John Coltrane recorded Giant Steps in May of that year and released Giant Steps in January 1960. While Kind of Blue has become a jazz standard for music fans, Giants Steps remains influential on both present and perhaps future generations of jazz musicians. 2. hey bigo, you keep delivering the goods, to quote judas priest. will get, thanks! i don’t have this either.

i counted my miles shows, and i have 33. i have two copies of shaboo inn. i got all from here, except for isle of wight, central park and oslo, norway, but, if you have better rips of central park 7.7.69, i definitely would download it. i don’t have mind having multiple copies of shows of favorites artists.

  5. I got this 4 CD set at Barnes & Noble quite a few years ago. I don’t think they knew what they were selling, but I did. Still one of my favorites.

  9. I remember when the 2LP set of the March 22 date was released on the Swedish Dragon label in 1985. It was one of those Holy Grail moments. Classic music!

  10. This is an official release. Dragon sent royalty cheques to Miles Davis every year. He comments on that in the autobio, saying they were a welcome income source sometimes. I presume they continue to send the cheques to his estate.

  11. hey bigo, i’m not really sure what this release is. after reading what twomonks said, i wasn’t going to take any chances so i just got disc 4. i now have all 23 tracks so i’m happy. :)

i know in the early 90’s i used to see the miles/stitt set sold as a two cd import in a local independent record store, but it definitely wasn’t on columbia/sony like official miles releases are. i remember it had a blue cover with white writing on it, a picture of miles and sonny, and it was inside of one of those fat jewel cases like the original pink floyd-the wall came in.

    Thank you!

  16. hey thomas, this is the best i can do. i did a search, and it’s out there sort of. however, it’s the version i saw in the early 90’s. it appears to be missing tracks 3-4 of disc 4. if you’re still interested, google blogspot miles davis sonny stitt stockholm 1960. i don’t know if the version bigo took down is available on itunes, if so, it’d cost you a few dollars. hope this helps you out.

if you still have difficulty and you’re on facebook, look me up. i’ll give you a link to the site where i saw it.

i’ve been buying miles albums for twenty years, and i honestly didn’t know this was an official release. i am happy i got it, though!

  22. Is there any chance of re-posting this set please? It seems like a long time since there was any Miles available here and this period is definitely one of his best. Thanks.
