THE DAVID BOWIE LIST
THE '60s
The Konrads [no Bowie]-
1965? Rehearsals [no label 1CD mindwarp 534]cover art is wrongly labelled
1963. "There are some doubts whether this is from 1963 and is from 1965
and consequently would not feature Bowie (Jones). According to Ruud Altenburg's
fine discography website David Bowie http://www.illustrated-db-discography.nl/SongB.htm:
"Baby It's Too Late
Now: released as a single (CBS 201812) by Bowie's former group The Konrads
in 1965, backed by 'I'm Over You'. A second single (Decca 32060), 'I Didn't
Know How Much' b/w 'I Thought Of You Last Night', was released in Canada
in the same year. In 2003, much to everyone's surprise a Konrads rehearsal
tape was said to have found its way into the collector's circuit. Not
long after, the bootleg Ziggy Final Farewell 1973 (Rattle Snake RS 313/32)
appeared, containing seven songs supposedly recorded in 1963. According
to the liner notes, these tracks were "The Konrads rehearsals, Bromley
Scout Hut, South London, July-August 1963." The following titles are given
to the seven tracks: The Better I Know/Now I'm On My Way/Baby It's Too
Late/I'm Over You/Judgement Day/I Don't Know How Much/I Thought Of You
Last Night. With the inclusion of four songs that were released in 1965,
it is clear that these songs were recorded during a 1965 studio session
without Bowie. "Another Bowie fan
who uses the pseudonym clarkgwent on Mind-Warp Pavilion claims on 2 September
2007 that "I own the original recording of this and can tell y'all a little
bit about it. It was all recorded in 1965 and none of it features Bowie.
The original CD that was given to me by the session's engineer didn't
include 'I Thought Of You Last Night'. I added that on from the 7" single.
I only ever gave one copy of this to somebody, on the strict understanding
that it shouldn't be copied. This at the request of the engineer that
originally gave it to me. So much for that..." Ex- SBD stereo. TT 18.11mins.

U.S. Date and place are not completely certain, but I have plumped for
Philadelphia in February 1971."The second is from
the LWT program Russell Harty Plus, broadcast on 17 January 1973. Bowie
appeared with the Spiders and played two songs, Drive In Saturday being
from the Aladdin Sane album, still in the process of being recorded. He

on this CD are three new versions of LOOKING FOR A FRIEND, one of MOONAGE
DAYDREAM and one of HANG ON TO YOURSELF (with Gene Vincent!). The rest of the
songs have been released on other discs. The sound quality is excellent, except

THE JACKSON BROWNE LIST
Jackson Browne -
The Nina Demos [2CD]. Predating his demos for the first album, Browne
wrote some undistinguished songs [just listen to his ode to Melissa] that
aped styles instead of being inspired. Still, fans will want to hear these
30 songs that offer no hint of the talented singer-songwriter. Very good
sound, a bit scratchy suggesting these are taken off demo records.
Jackson Browne -
The Criterion Demos [1CD]. In the days of vinyl, there were lots of Jackson
Browne bootlegs but by the time bootleg CDs arrived, Browne's appeal had
faded, hence these releases found on the net are welcomed. The Criterion
Demos have first takes of Jamaica Say You Will, Song For Adam, Doctor
My Eyes, My Opening Farewell and lots more all in excellent quality. The
unreleased track from the first album, Nightingale, is distinguished by
exceptionally poor quality. Get this if you can.
Jackson Browne -
The Young Pretender [1CD]. Subtitled "Jackson Browne's first known recorded
performance", that should get you excited. Mostly songs from the first
two albums, the show was recorded Mar 27 1971 at Syracuse University,
in New York. Before singing the last song of the show, Looking Into You,
an agitated Browne tells his audience to "shut the fuck up". An excellent
solo show [Jackson switches from guitar to piano] in excellent sound.

Robin Gibb - Sing Slowly Sisters [Captain Acid 1CD] The 1970 Unreleased
LP as mastered by Captain Acid in 2004. Originally recorded January to
April 1970 in London. Sing Slowly Sisters was to have been Robins
second solo album after Robins Reign. Most of the songs feature
a large orchestra and many vocal overdubs. Very Special Day, Sky West
and Crooked and Avalanche have backing vocal dubs but no orchestra. A
group of three songs recorded together - Ive Been Hurt, Irons In
The Fire and Cold Be My Days - have no rhythm section at all and Robin
varies the tempo as he sings to large orchestral arrangements. None of
these songs has been released or recorded by other artists and only a
few have been published. Four are lost and not in the RSO tape library.
No tracklist was ever drawn up for this album. The 17 songs chosen here
are at best a guess as to what would have been the final 12 tracks. This
2004 release retitles Janice found on other versions to You Are Still
My Shining Star and adds Avalanche not found on other versions. Tk 2 of

live at Ontario Motor Speedway, California, April 6, 1974. The last track

This is the lineage: Soundboard Recording (unedited version) (released
track removed) Maxell MX-90 metal-particle cassette (rec'd in trade (No
Gen known), 20-25 years old). This is the claim: "The definitive copy
The main things that convince me that this is an actual source tape are
the lack of cuts which would be indicative of a boot LP of this length
(at least four sides of wax), and the inclusion of ALL of the between
song dialogue INCLUDING almost 2 solid minutes between the main set and
the encore of nonstop soundboard audience noise through the on-stage mics.
None of that is common in the boot LP world." In my opinion, the show
was not properly mic so the recording is still flawed. Ex- SBD stereo.
