RAY MANZAREK R.I.P. 1939-2013

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, has died. He was 74. Publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald says Manzarek died on May 20, 2013 at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family. He had bile duct cancer. Manzarek founded The Doors after meeting then-poet Jim Morrison in California. The Washington Post reported that Manzarek had continued to remain active in music after Morrison¹s death in 1971. Manrazek had briefly tried to hold the band together by serving as vocalist, but eventually the group fell apart. He played in other bands over the years, produced other acts, became an author and worked on films.

Jimbo’s Blues [no label, 1CD]

Live at The Civic Auditorium, Bakersfield, California, August 21, 1970. Excellent - stage recording in stereo.

The first indication that a fine recording of The Doors live at Bakersfield emerged in 2000 with the limited release of the CD, The Bright Midnight Sampler: 14 Songs, 8 Concerts. Tucked away as the second to final track was this medley: Love Me Two Times/ Baby Please Don’t Go/ St James Infirmary. It was identified as a “stage recording”.

We’re not sure who first mentioned this but it is believed that “Vince Treanor, The Doors’ tour manager, recorded the show for the band on a Sony reel-to-reel using two microphones placed on the stage. While not a multitrack high fidelity recording, it is clean, quiet, and clear, allowing the unbridled energy of the performances to shine through”.

On the net, fan bumina added, “The Doors never used a soundboard while Jim was with them. They tuned on stage and adjusted levels. Vince (Treanor) would use a reel-to-reel recorder and just raw fed some well-placed microphones. To my knowledge, all the Bright Midnight releases are from this kind of source which is really evident in the Boston shows released a couple of years back. Jim’s mic goes out during Alabama Song and you still hear him faintly over the music… pretty impressive stuff.”

This concert comes a week before the Doors’ performance at the Isle Of Wight. Whoever did the cover art and titled this “Jimbo’s Blues” must be referencing the Miami incident as Jim’s mugshots are on display on the cover art. That sense of despondency is clear in the ragged singing. The recording industry was rewarding hard rock and heavy metal for bringing in large crowds but The Doors’ revolution was not to be encouraged.

What we are sharing here is ghostryder14’s copy of this recording. Thanks ghostryder14.

  7. SUPER great find… been on the prowl for this one for years!

–Also, a partial, but muscular version of “Eyes” is at the end of the closing medley on the last disc of the 4th show of “Live in New York”. Why it’s not on listed on the album credits is another mysterious boneheaded oversight on the part of the Doors camp.

  12. when you go here and convert youtube videos to need to delete the url in the box shown and insert the youtube url of the video you want to convert.

By sluggo on Feb 11, 2012

  13. PS forgot to mention, with you don’t need a url to search, just type in what you want i.e. The Doors Bakersfield and you get a lot of related items. I use this system to fill in those missing gaps in my collection as there is a lot of useful stuff posted on Utube. Also have a listen before you download as some of it can be poor postings.

  17. i guess i was misunderstood somehow. not sure why. i dont have any trouble converting yt clips to mp3. i thought there might be ppl here who may have this problem. i use a program that does this for me. it does many other things too but its big thing is the yt to mp3 thing. i was kinda just suggesting that if there were ppl who needed that assistance that they could ask for it from others here who could help them incl myself.
thanks to those who were so kind in their attempts to come to the rescue however. if only someone would come to my rescue by helping me find a woman. sigh.
been looking for 35 fn years!!

  19. The closest I came to seeing the Doors was in 1977 at the Whiskey when I went to see Ray’s group Nite City. John & Robbie were seated at a table and stood up when Ray pointed them out but they could not be persuaded to go on stage.

In 1990 I got to see Robbie with Eric Burdon.

Thanks Darth for the YouTube link. I don’t go there enough to find things on my own.
