LAURA MARLING
BBC In Concert 2011 [no label, 1CD]

Live at BBC Maida Vale Studios, London, UK; September 15, 2011 and broadcast September 22, 2011 by BBC Radio Two, “Radio 2 In Concert”. Ex FM stereo.

Laura Marling believes in the song as a form of artistic expression not the road to glory, although that helps pay the bills. She explained the process in an interview with the Guardian UK.

“I think I stew over ideas for a long time. And I can get fixated on an idea, it will probably start with something from a book I’ve found interesting, and then I’ll probably think about it and then I’ll have conversations with myself about it, and then obviously it seeps into my conscious(ness) and a song will be written about it”, she told The Guardian. “The songs had been written, or more accurately there was nothing left to say, but I think I waited for a month or so before I did anything with them. Then most of them were demoed sitting here, with a microphone hanging there”, she added. - wikipedia

Fans have heard echoes of Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake in her work. The former for her lyrics while the latter for her odd melodies. She is more folk singer than indie pop. Lyrics are important. They are written, chewed over, rewritten and then embraced. No pop hooks for this up-and-coming artist. Others compare her to Joni Mitchell, they share the same gender.

Certainly no videos yet of Marling in her swimsuit by the pool. This was shared at Dime by paul_b35_uk, to whom we gratefully thank.

  2. Laura Marling is awesome–it’s amazing she’s not better known in the States (though, admittedly, I’ve personally profited by her lack of popularity by easingly snagging a front row spot to see her at the World Cafe in Philly just a few months back…).

  3. Well worth a listen and worthy to be stuck in anyone’s collection. Lets hope she keeps going as there is definitely talent here. Also an excellent sound quality broadcast.
