SANTANA
Santa Cruz 1981 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, Santa Cruz, CA; February 21, 1981. Excellent pre-FM stereo.

Thanks to Hipstone for sharing the tracks at Demonoid.

By many fans’ reckoning, this is a great show - the FM broadcast has been circulating for quite a while now - Santana’s guitar playing is red hot and the band is equal to the task.

This vinyl-sourced version has just surfaced and this is what Hipstone noted:

This is a Hipstone needle drop from original 2LP set transcription discs for radio airplay. Another live chapter, not Lotus, but closer to Moonflower maybe. Good clean levels, newish stylus tracking clean vinyl. That’s all there is here folks. I didn’t remove any ticks or anything. I figure I can always go back and touch things up. But it is kinda nice to hear it exactly as it is, providing it’s not a trashed copy.

Not sure if anyone is interested in this one, but it is one of the best radio promos for recording quality. This one has also made the round in various mixed quality. I would say that this is the final upgrade for this show.

  6. This sounds like just another audience tape, youse guys try to pass of as “Radio or Sndbd”
It aint all that bad, though. I don’t know, maybe it’s two audience tapes. Maybe it really IS pre-FM. I don’t think so. I’m so corn-fused.

  7. another one i remember recording when it was aired. absolutely one of my all time favorite concerts i ever recorded off the radio. i played this one to death. fabulous period for santana. he soars here. talk about a feel good show. i went to several shows he did on the east coast this year. some of my favorite memories. as i often say once he won grammys he lost it. but this is 7 yrs before that happened i think.
my opinion but.. best years for santana are -
    68 69 70 71 73 76 77 78 80 81 83 86/87(maybe)
not necessarily in any order of course. im not that anal. haha.
i say maybe on the last 2 cuz they just arent that great. not compared to all those other years. i have some santana shows that are just so good they make me cry. u just cant help thinking.. why cant all concerts be this good?
dont get me wrong..there are some shows since 87 that have been good. probably for a few songs snatched out of each show. a compilation of best of’s really. but for full concerts? give me nearly anything pre 86. thats his glory days.
theres some nice clips of srv with carlos out there and eric with him too. those shows from 76 with the two of them..wow.
why arent there any tapes of carlos and jimi? or eric with jimi? or beck with carlos other than the japan 86 thing? why arent there carlos with roy buchanan recordings? or steve morse? there are 100s of pairings that should be out there. i saw howe with morse once. why is there no tape of this? it has to have happened more than once. ok enough venting.
btw there is a roy buchanan with jimi. betcha didnt know that. did ya? i know u all knew there a bb king with jimi. course theres a john mclaughlin with jimi and a taj mahal with jimi and steve stills with jimi. the one i am most upset about the non existence of is ec and jimi. dozens of times they jammed together yet not one f’n recording.

  9. Thank you for the Santana. Not that anyone asked but Caravanseri will always rule for me, followed closely by Abraxas.

Memories of Andre Norton and Trinidad Bolivia. Curt Marr, John Warren, are you out there anywhere?

    Be well Big O Amigos.

  10. I was at this show. My girlfriend and I were right in the front. After a while, she started getting sleepy, I guess ’cause we were pretty high. Carlos leaned down during the bass solo and asked her if she was OK. She was OK and it really was nice to see how caring Carlos seemed to be.
    Great show, great memories.

  12. I saw them just a couple of weeks later outside of Miami at a show where Carlos’ brother Jorge sat in on some numbers. I remember it as one of the finest shows I’ve seen by anyone. This was a really good version of the band, no doubt.
