Salzburg 2011 [no label, 2CD]

Live at Grosses Festspielhaus, Salzburg, Austria; November 6, 2011. Broadcast on ORF. Ex FM stereo.

At 70, Paul Anka still has “it”. Maybe the old voice has toughened up a bit, certainly the boyish ring is gone replaced by a mature tenor. Still, Anka can hold a melody, charm an audience and has the deep catalog of hits to entertain.

This is a concert from five months ago with an orchestra to back him. The hits come rolling by - Diana, You Are My Destiny, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Puppy Love, Lonely Boy and, of course, My Way. This is pure nostalgia of a time gone by when professional writers like Paul Anka, who was an alumnus at the Brill Building, aspired to be stars in their own right.

All Anka’s songs had the sole purpose to be hits. They came with a tried-and-tested formula of catchy melody, memorable hooks and verse-chorus-verse. What’s there to argue? Anka’s tunes are today’s evergreens.

Sit back and enjoy. Thanks to ladyface57 for sharing this show at DIME.

In 1962, Paul Anka decided to rerecord his greatest hits from the ’50s in stereo. Since then, time has blurred memories and many compilations feature the re-recorded stereo versions of songs like Diana, Lonely Boy, You Are My Destiny and many others. But if the original mono singles are what you want, order this title instead: His All Time Greatest Hits: 30th Anniversary Collection. Buy it here.
