CYNDI LAUPER
Tokyo 2012 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Bunkamura Orchard Hall, Tokyo, Japan; March 11, 2012. Audio extracted from WOWOW HDTV broadcast.

One year ago, on March 11, 2011, Cyndi Lauper and her band were 10 minutes from landing at Tokyo’s Narita airport when the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami struck Japan. After circling the airport, they landed at an army base with a big decision to make. Lauper and her team decided it would not be courageous to leave. Unlike all other scheduled entertainers, they stayed to give joy and happiness to the Japanese people by completing all their scheduled concert dates throughout the aftershocks and continuing bad news.

“I talked to my crew… I said I’d like to stay because I felt it would be a good distraction (for people) and if music is truly healing then let’s see, put it to the test here.” - Cyndi Lauper

Jump forward to March 11, 2012, Cyndi Lauper and her band return to Japan to commemorate the 1st anniversary of those devastating natural disasters by performing a concert live at Orchard Hall in Tokyo. WOWOW, Japan’s premier subscriber based television network, will broadcast the concert live, unscrambled and free to the citizens of the northern prefectures most devastated by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters. In addition, theaters throughout the region will be open free of charge for citizens to come together to view the concert free.

“If I left, what would ‘True Colours’ have meant anyway? What kind of healing song would it have been if I came in singing that and then hightailed it out of here because it looked a little scary?” - Cyndi Lauper

“I’m here this year to give some ganbatte [meaning good luck, do your best or to not give up] + let folks know I haven’t forgotten about them.” - Cyndi Lauper, March 2012

  2. Surprisingly great. Really enjoyed the show. The Japanese song and the one from her blues album were real treats. Thanks for the post.

  3. I always liked her better than Madonna in the eighties, but people would argue with me.

  6. i hate cyndi with an enormous passion. shes the reason i wouldnt buy the we are the world record. i nearly refused to buy the roger waters video of berlin because of her but his existence on it and some of the other people on there overweighed that she was on it. plus it was a hell of a performance overall. i just cant stand lauper. her voice goes thru me like needles. i had to read the comments however and saw dave’s comment. i knew she did a blues cd. that to me is as worth listening to or even giving a chance to as buffy fighting the rock. just the idea bothers me. but dave said it was a treat so i figured ok let me guess which song it is. that wasnt too hard. duh. i listened to it. ok her voice isnt squealing with that annoying sound that im sure is there on the 2nd to last song. shes lucky i didnt search her out and kill her when she released that song. i really wanted to. oh how i hated her because of that song.
so anyway… thank u dave. i wont dl anything else from this show but i will keep that one track. wonder if she ever did any shows with more of her blues songs? it would have to be either sbd or fm. if anyone knows of any feel free to let me know. thanks

  7. There are about five Cyndi/blues shows over on sugarm*gs …The only one that interests me is the New Orleans jazz fest show because charlie Musslewhite and the rising star fife and drum band are with her. Speaking of Charlie Musslewhite , he`s the only reason i bought Cyndi`s blues disc..like Darth,I`m not a fan but I do love charlie musslewhite.

  9. i have a few pics of myself that i have scanned into the computer. one of them is from summer 95 from penns landing in phila during the river blues festival in late june. the pic is of me in a tiedye shirt but its cropped. i didnt really have a pic of myself and i needed to put one up of me online at the time. i didnt like many of the pics i had of me of the 400 that i had with rock stars tv stars etc. i found one of me with charlie musselwhite and i knew no one would know who he is so i cropped him out and just scanned me. he did a fantastic set just after we took that pic.
i didnt know that charlie is on that cd of hers. i cant even imagine what it took to get him to agree to do it. he musta really needed the money. i hear pat benatar has a blues album too. i guess id be more likely to give her a chance than cyndi.

g - first concert? wow. u are so young i guess. my first shows were phil ochs barry mcguire and the young rascals. then there were a bunch after that then the beatles. then a whole bunch more.. then jimi opening for the monkees. by the time i went to woodstock i was 9 yrs old but i had seen easily over 60 concerts. my parents would do anything to get rid of me. my next door neighbors were very kewl. too bad they werent my parents. there were things i didnt get to see but the things i did many of them i didnt fully appreciate at the time either. not til many years later. and much of what i saw and heard i hated and still do. ill never enjoy free form jazz.
the best years of my concert going experience that i remember and appreciated most were 70-80. then i got a camera and i started taping things. in 77 i started seeing something live nearly every single day. i got up to what i believe is 2220 live shows by nov 1995. the last being clapton. then i left nyc and went to arizona. i saw only 3 more gigs in 96. and never again since then have i seen another. the last 3 were john prine moodies and monkees (with roger clinton opening). i woulda seen the band but they changed venues in april 96 without announcing the new location so we ended up eating the tickets and it didnt happen. i might have known about the change of venues but i was in pittsburgh til the day before or of the show.
at least u still get to see shows. lucky u.
there are state fairs only a block or two away from my home but i wont go alone even tho some of the shows are reasonably decent and prices arent terrible either.

sluggo - ill look for the no la jazz fest to dl that one. i guess. if i hear one squeal tho. just one… im comin fer ya. ill disguise myself as a garth hudson cigar and youll never recognize me.
