Jazz Middelheim 2011 [no label, 1CD]

Live in Antwerp, Belgium, August 15, 2011. Excellent FM stereo.

At this show, Liberation Music Orchestra saxophonist Tony Malaby explains in the radio interview that Carla Bley and Charlie Haden are writing a new piece of work with the ecology movement in mind. The orchestra play one tune from this new work, Blue In Green Blue And Green. As with their recent collaborations, Bley and Haden prefer to explore late night jazz and Blue In Green Blue And Green relies on that sophisticated interplay between individual instruments and a comforting melody to deliver. It’s music to put you in a meditative mood.

Much of this concert is devoted to the music from the previous Liberation Music Orchestra album, 2005’s Not In Our Name. So there’s plenty of “thinking” music here. Mainly the themes are mournful and regrettable. Not In Our Name was Haden and Bley writing about Bush Jr’s American politics and how they felt “this is not America”. Michael Rodriguez who blows trumpet on the album is also present at this concert.

Haden belongs to the ’60s generation and his music reflects their thoughtfulness. Thanks to grateful_c2d for sharing this at DIME.
