BOB DYLAN AND THE BAND
The Complete Basement Tapes: From the Reels [no label, CD 1 and 2 of 11]

Recorded at “Big Pink”, West Saugerties, New York, 1967. This 11-CD set was released in 2001. Outtakes and rarities.

Philip Cohen notes:

This is the most complete Basement Tapes collection in circulation. Please be cautioned that some of the tracks on Disc One are severely distorted and barely listenable. This is not for audiophiles. It is for completists who want everything; warts and all.

Note: A longtime music fan, Philip Cohen was a contributor to the now-defunct ICE Magazine and compiled the boxsets for The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Humble Pie and Nice.

Notes from rec.music.dylan, August 2001:

Here is the concept of the original 10CD set. The order on the Genuine Basement Tape series is unsatisfactory (and the way the bootleggers missed out Band tracks and even one Dylan track), and I preferred the order on the original tapes. Of course the order on the tapes is not the reel order either so with the help of Invisible Republic/Heylin it is possible to work out a very rough reel order.

It got too hard for reels 5-7 so they are just lumped together (these are the mostly original basement tracks anyway, and they sit nicely together). As you all know the details of the reels is sketchy at best, so at times just rough 74-min groupings are used. An overriding principle was to preserve the reel order.

Somewhere along the line it was realised that the ‘historical artifacts’ associated with the Basements were not represented, so the 14 song Acetate disk needed to be added. Then of course the alternate takes were not represented either, so the ‘20 song Acetate disk’ was added. I know that this completely duplicated the ‘14 song Acetate’, but the 14 song one was the acetate that was very special, and deserved a disk in it’s own right! The Publisher’s demos were different again. Different tracks and different mixes. So these were added to this set as well. Finally, there were all those ‘mostly Band’ tracks that had emerged over the years, so they are just assembled onto a misc CD (#10).

In the time since this ‘fan project’ was completed, there have been a couple of other ‘Basement’ releases, one a 5 CDR set, nice quality, but lacking many tracks (…almost nothing from reel 1) emerged, and more recently the 4CD ‘Tree with Roots’ emerged. These have been carefully compared as well, and where appropriate, tracks were upgraded to the original 10CD set. Recently, someone else seems to have gotten hold of this set and and thinks that there were some other missing tracks (I’m not particularly convinced that reel 11 contains any new Basement tracks at all…) and added these tracks to reel #11.

  5. If you want to savor the complete ‘67 basement experience, these 11cds are essential. So much for the ‘official’ released set!!

The caveat is , as Phil Cohen notes , this set is for completists only. There are many unfinished tracks and many poorly recorded tracks here and the official basement tapes is a lot of fun for easy listeners.
I would once again recommend the book Million Dollar Bash to be read while listening track to track..

  7. sluggo - at first I thought Philip Cohen wrote that it was the whole set. But when I looked back, he was only talking about the first CD in the set. So there’s hope that the rest is more “easy listening”, although I would not classify Bob Dylan with Perry Como…

  8. Hello Philip. Thanks very much for the basement tapes. Didn’t have this stuff. No matter how many I tell about Big O and how great this site is, they just don’t “get it.” It’s like those content with listening to “K-Earth” KRTH 101.1FM, where they sporatically get to listen to the same 2 hits from Bob Dylan, and ONLY those 2 hits. The man is so, so much more. A station could play wall-to-wall Dylan 24/7 and have more variety than KRTH.

  10. short side note - The 30yr old drunk who hit me was sentenced yesterday (he had 3 prior dui accidents in 2004, 2007 and dec 2008). 16 months in state pen…reduced to 13 mos. due to good behavior in jail for 5 weeks…THEN remanded (due to a state-wide prisoner reduction program ordered by a state judge) over to the county jail to be released early - maybe by July 2012. Some justice! I still dont have my car being worked on. His mommy’s car insurance hasnt given the okay yet. Im still under treatment 3 times a week, Friday I go in to an Ortho shoulder specialist to confirm my torn rotator cuff.

  11. re:short side note.

    un-frikkin`-believable.

By sluggo on Apr 26, 2012

  12. I should assume then that this is more comprehensive and complete than A Tree with Roots?

  13. 4yrs- So the dude was 21 or 22 at his first offense? This is his 4th? And he still has a drivers license and mommy’s insurance! Now he will serve a few months at county and be rehabilitated.?????????????????????
If we’d all been livin’ in California.(This state is messed up but I’ll save my gripes)

There are 44 men stashed away in tank C and there’s only one shower but it don’t apply to Bobby.

I can only hope he finds a ‘friend’ in there.

  14. Hello,
Once again I find a gem on your site. Even if sound is not always perfect, it is history. Moreover I am not alone interested in downloading.
Many thanks for sharing all that you have.
    Best regards from France,

  15. Big Pink was always a required stop on my many visits to Woodstock. It’s almost as if the essence of all that creativity and the joy of just making music lingers around the place like an aura. Even my friend — who knew nothing of Dylan and The Band — felt the “vibes” being there.

Thanks for always giving us what we want, BigO!

  16. I’ve always been interested in hearing the track of Bob with Tiny Tim(not a joke) recorded up at Woodstock. Bob knew Tiny from the Greenwich Village days.
