GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS
Basel 2012 [no label, 2CD]

Live in Basel, Switzerland, April 23, 2012. A hanwaker SBD-AUD matrix recording. Excellent.

The Swiss make great cheese not rock bands. But they are great in drawing top talent to their cities. Just ask the Great Lake Swimmers’ singer Tony Dekker. It’s their first visit and the host has given them an hour and a half to play mostly brand new songs from their just-released album, New Wild Everywhere. How many bands can capture an audience with brand new songs?

If you’re sceptical, try their warm cover of Gram Parsons’ A Song For You. Need further convincing, then Cornflower Blue or the chillingly familiar Your Rocky Spine. Brings you back to ‘72 or is that ‘75?

Dekker says Parsons is a definite influence and it shows in all these bittersweet, folk-country songs. The band originate from Canada and are currently residing in Toronto. So there’s more than a bit of Neil Young in their songs.

The lyrics to On The Water has the same flavour as Young’s Rust Never Sleeps’ Powderfinger.

I thought of my family and thought of my love
I thought of my maker and what might be above
And the cabin in the woods that I have not yet build
Many other things that I hold dear in this world

I rode through the turmoil and rode through the strife
I held to my words and I clumped to my life
And then when my vision began to blur
This is what I saw in the thought that had occur

This is a very brave song to borrow a theme from so popular a songwriter and pulling it off. If you haven’t heard of them, time to start now. Great Lake Swimmers are already onto their fifth album. A huge thanks to hanwaker for sharing this great show.

  6. okay ,I might be way off base here but a few years ago someone sent me a cassette tape of a band called Urban Turban, and I dunno but they might have been Swiss..or Swedes..or well who knows but what I do know is there was a cover version of Jimi`s ‘Voodoo Chile” that just tickled me to death..I can`t find that tape now and would love another listen of that song..

  8. hey oberts, I really appreciate the offer however I made the mistake once here giving my email address and I`ll never make that mistake again. no disrespect intended, it just creeped me out the way things turned out.

By sluggo on Jun 10, 2012

  9. sluggo, you might want to create an email address to get the link, then drop it when it gets weird.

  21. Hey BigO,
I don’t think hanker told you to take this recording off. He just doesn’t like it when you reduce the flac files to 224 or 192 kbps.
So where can I get the recording now? I don’t use torrent sites.
By the way, I also think that you should use 320 kbps. The fantastic music you offer here deserves more than only 192 or 224.
