Solo in Munich [no label, 1CD]

Live at Philharmonie, Munich, Germany; March 8, 2012. Ex FM stereo.

If you are from the ’60s, you will have your Randy Newman moment. For this writer, it was Political Science. How could anyone write a song on that subject? And yet be entertaining? If he’d put a crystal ball in front of him, I’d say he’d seen the future.

No one likes us - I don’t know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let’s drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money - but are they grateful?
No, they’re spiteful and they’re hateful
They don’t respect us - so let’s surprise them
We’ll drop the big one and pulverize them

“No one likes us” will hit a nerve these days.

Neither were music fans supportive of Newman’s cynicism, despite wide critical acclaim for his music and even a hit single for his song Mama Told Me Not To Come (as sung by Three Dog Night). Not enough fans “liked him”. Shrewdly, Newman left the rock scene and went into the family business. Newman had three uncles - Alfred, Lionel and Emil - who were noted composers for Hollywood films.

With his gruff vocal style and round, chubby face topped with a head of curly hair, our teddy was never going to be a hip-swivelling rock ‘n’ roll star. Provoking short people was also probably not a good idea. But Hollywood welcomed him and he scored many films and earned two Academy Awards, five Grammys and a lot more silverware than we wish to remember.

But it was also not rock music. It was in 1983 after Trouble In Paradise that Newman decided to strike out as a film composer. During the two decades that followed, he managed three albums of new material as a singer-songwriter.

This 2012 tour is a solo tour with just Newman on the piano, recalling his favourite tunes. No incidental music from Toy Story. The tour begs the question, whether the songs still have any bite or is it just nostalgia?

They all hate us anyhow
So let’s drop the big one now
Let’s drop the big one now

Randy Newman released a live album in 2011. Live In London is a show at LSO St Luke’s, an old church, from 2008. Buy the album and get the bonus DVD of the same concert here.

Newman also re-recorded his songs on The Randy Newman Songbook Vol 2 which he also released in 2011. This recording is similar to his current tour, solo with piano as accompaniment. Buy it here.

  2. tonites austin city limits repeat from nov 12th last year is also randy newman for anyone who happens to catch this in time to tune in.

and off topic - cheap trick is on the show front row center which in my market is on immediately afterwards. that is a show from may 10th this year. fantastic show.
for people who enjoy catching sat nite music programming…right after that in my market is another show called sun studio sessions. tonites show is ryan bingham. a grammy and academy award winner. this show is from march 10th this year. thats only a half hour show. the other 2 are full hour long shows. theres another half hour music show after this too called music voyager that i like sometimes but there would be limited interest in tonites show. its roots rock reggae and features kumina drumming session with the akwaaba drummers and also reggae sunsplash founder ronnie burke. this show originally aired march 7th 2010.

  3. Thanks very much, but are you kidding with that question? These songs have as much bite as ever. They’re timeless.
