Illinois 1976 [Goody Pitch Corrected Edition, 2CD]

Live at the Foellenger Auditorium, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL; January 6, 1976. Good to fairly good WPGU 107.1 FM broadcast.

There are some shows, such as this, that if not passed around, will simply get swallowed up in the mists of time. And there are better-sounding shows but here is one where the band really cooks.

Thanks to Goody for the efforts and to featseeker for sharing the tracks on Dime.

This is what Goody commented:

What a beautiful mess this is… The vocals are either not there or they’re distorted. [Ed: The reception slightly off?] The mix is atrocious.

But the playing! Man, the playing… Richie’s tight drumroll fills. Two smokin’ guitars. Groovin’ for days. Billy gluin’ it all together. And those songs!

Yeah, it’s a Little Feat show alright.

I wonder what the poor folks listening to this on the air that night thought? “Well, I sure am lovin’ this. But what are they thinking, broadcasting something as unprofessional sounding as this? Will the FCC fine them for improper modulation? Take away their license completely? Sure, we’re lucky to just get any scraps thrown our way. And these sure are the creme de la creme of ’scraps’. Uhhh, Rilly…”

OK. Enough of my snark. This show rocks! And I sure do love the different perspectives offered here by this hapless engineer behind the board that day. To give him the benefit of any doubt, he was probably scurrying around back then, trying to do his best to figure out what was going wrong… and why… and how to make it right, ASAP. Or, he had another one rolled up and ready ta go, and it was all just, like, fine, brah - don’t know what ‘cher sayin’…

Sorry - more unavoidable snark. This isn’t about me. It’s about Lowell and his compadres trying to make do on a cold day in Illinois, America, 1976. Doin’ what they love. Doin’ what nobody else does near as well on his best day. We’re lucky enough for it to have survived in some form that I could bring this new pitch-corrected remaster to you today. It was originally playing kinda slow/flat. Patched up a big dropout in the first track with a little trickery, too. Don’t think y’all’ll mind.

This all means THANKS for the source and all involved in getting it down its checkered past to my inbox. Just been havin’ a little fun with y’all. Meantime, I’ve listened to it about half a dozen times, just gettin’ it fixed up. The honor and pleasure’s all mine. Wait’ll you hear this “Long Distance Love”. Thank Lowell there’s nothin’ wrong with THAT… Three minutes and thirty seconds of perfection right there.

Oh - and dig the vintage commercials mixed in with some of the applause. Surprisingly unobtrusive. Well, ya know, they didn’t just give this stuff away for free… But WE do!

This is a hot one…

Thanks for leavin’ a little somethin’ behind, boys. Doesn’t mean we’re still not gonna be missin’ y’all.

  2. if the musicianship / jams or just the ability to groove on the guitar that is lowell is what u are after…then u cant even think of complaining here. this problem is not in the broadcast from what i can tell either. its in feed being delivered to desk that is putting out the signal to the broadcast feed. if there were two different recordings from two totally different people it would be much easier to tell. im also tempted to think that its a problem on the end of the person recording it with an inferior tape deck and radio.
all in all it really isnt that bad at all considering its 36 years old and one of the lesser known feat recordings. there arent that many out there after all. im happy as fk having this in my collection.
at the end of oh! atlanta (which is missing the exclamation point above) it sure sounds to me like someone is actually holding a microphone near a speaker to record this. i am unable at this point to ascertain whether or not this item is in stereo. can anyone else? if its not.. i might be correct. that commercial is very strange sounding to me.

  5. Thank you for the effort, but really the quality of recording and conversion is dire, not worth it, better to go find a version of Electric Lycanthrope instead..same period…professional recording and cut on vinyl

  6. while u may think that sugarmegs would deserve the credit u are mistaken. sugarmegs obtains their items the same way anyone else does and creates a single file out of whatever they get their hands on. they are not the source for the material u are hearing here. just because u find the same words on both doesnt mean that what u see here came from there. in all likelihood sugarmegs copied the information from a site where the show was posted and used that information on their info page. then bigo obtained the show from either the same site or another with the same info posted and quoted the info as it appeared. it most absolutely is not written by the guy who runs sugarmegs (peter). all of the stuff he posts on his site came from other people who sent it to him or from sites he visited and took it from along with the information available there.

perhaps if u put more effort and energy in the right direction rather than trying to harass me indirectly and in a backhanded manner u wouldnt have made such a ridiculous statement as u did here.

By darth on Jul 5, 2012

  7. Thanks so much for putting this up. I was a senior at Urbana High School when Little Feat came to town for this show and I hadn’t yet “discovered” what would soon be my favorite band. I saw them at a much larger venue in Champaign (Assembly Hall) a few years later and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. Glad I got to see them when Lowell was still around.

  10. i didnt say it was directed at me. not this time anyway. previous posts were clearly tho. my post was directed at u tho. i was correcting your mistake. u couldnt know i suppose because perhaps u are new to this whole world of collecting or downloading music from online. so i took the time to explain things to u. i didnt accuse u of directing this particular posting to me. however other postings u have made were clearly direct and not so direct but very obvious attacks towards me whether u admit them or not. dont insult anyones intelligence here.
i never said it was about me. and the fact that no one is credited could be for a reason. no one might know for sure who wrote the original series of paragraphs. that u thought it came from sugarmegs shows u didnt have a clue. thats the last place to consider giving credit. original information never ever comes from there. u werent doing anyone any favors. its not an intentional thing that people dont credit sources. if u look around u will find that this site more than most any other credits their sources for the items and the information that they post along with it. the last thing u should be bitching about here is that this site isnt doing that.
of course the show is all over the place. its 3 dozen years old. if u are happy with the copy u found on sugarmegs and think that copy is better than the one here and u really believe that the copy here came from the copy there.. which is mind boggling that u would think that.. then go there for it. go to all the other blogs and sites where u can find the music we have here. we like this site. what is your problem with this site?? its like u have something against it. we all know there are other sites to get things from. many of us use those sites as well. this is one more site. its not a competition. cant u just appreciate what there is and enjoy it?? whats with u?

  13. I see darth is still making friends

By barth on Jul 5, 2012

  14. hey, dropkick and darth, pissing will just short out the electronics ;)

but, seriously, here’s a perfect example of what this site and it’s community can do for all of us:

tho a 40-yr avid X and Blasters fan from SoCal, i never knew that Dave wrote this song; only heard the track from ‘See How We Are’.

so, thanks for that, dropkick sgt!

and yes, i think of darth as a friend, with every post.

and as your friend, darth, i’m asking you to please remember that everybody knows something different, so avoid patronizing and overreacting (speaking from lifelong experience as a pompous ass). i don’t feel that dropkick’s post is really disparaging of bigo’s work, just pointing out that the possible error in a lightly joking manner.

me personally, as an optimist, i tend to assume best intent.

but then, my dad defined an optimist as the guy who jumps off a tall building, and passing each floor calls out the friends waiting below: “everything’s fine so far.” ….

By deadheadned on Jul 5, 2012

  15. and one more pertinent note to the original discussion:

you’ll ALWAYS see bigo crediting everything he can on this site, esp when someone points out any errors.

THANKS, BIGO, and keep up with the great work you do, whether music, journalism or social commentary (even Mystery Song contests!!!)

and i’ll be proud to donate to and support this site as long it may stand, hopefully for many years to come! :)

  16. oh, btw, this show ROCKS !!!!!

“trying to harass me indirectly” it never ends, does it?

By barth on Jul 5, 2012

  18. “SOME TIMES IT ISN`T ABOUT YOU.” SARGE, its always about darth. always

By barth on Jul 5, 2012

  19. deadhead - bigo didnt make any error. i explained this already. drop is wrong and i explained why and how. i did not overreact. he wasnt joking and there was no possible error on the part of bigo.

as far as him getting into a pissing match with me and telling me to get off his back.. i suggest u check some of his postings on some of the other offerings on this site that very obviously were blatantly harassing me. i didnt write them. he did.

im not patronizing anyone. i think u misused the word. not sure what u meant to say there.
as for it being about me… i didnt say anything about the credit on the words used for this item being given to the right / wrong source being about me. none of that is about me. what IS about me is the various postings that were made intending to mock me on the other items on this site. do i need to specify which ones?
why is this still going on???

Calm down ladies! Nobody really cares! We love the site & we all love the music that they give us! Isn’t that the reason we all come here? Although, it is pretty funny!

  26. i am not pissing with him. thats hardly whats going on at all. try to pay better attention. read what i am typing. i also was responding to someone else not sarge in my last posting.
and im not posting things to harass anyone. if u look carefully he is.

as for peace..yes.. stop the harassment and there is peace. funny how that works isnt it?

sarge - the item u are posting from halloween 75 has been offered on this site.

By darth on Jul 6, 2012

  27. “pay better attention. read what i am typing.” don’t tell us what to do! stop doing this! take this to the other site!! leave me alone! you’re not on topic, i am!!

By barth on Jul 6, 2012

  28. Darth - you’re rendering that scaffolding dangerous.

By tarth on Jul 6, 2012

  29. “Not pissing with him”? If this isn’t a classic urine fest, I don’t know what is. “Pay better attention”? “Stop the harassment”? Oh, I have been paying attention. If you’d shut the hell up, there would be no problems. I believe that you started all of this by whipping it out because ‘Sarge’ mentioned that he’d seen this post before. Funny how THAT works isn’t it?

By Starrwatts on Jul 7, 2012

  30. “If you’d shut the hell up, there would be no problems.”

By Garth on Jul 7, 2012

  31. its not up to me to shut the hell up. youre telling that to the wrong person. and the idiot has the fucking gall to amen u. holy crap!!! the one responsible for the problem!! unbelievable!!
if u are paying attention u wouldnt tell me that i should be shutting up. u would be telling the harasser to stop his harassment. u dont tell the one defending himself that hes wrong for defending. if there is no offense there would be no reason for a defense. what the hell is wrong with u? are u really that insane?? i cant believe u have the audacity to suggest that its my fault. thats truly psychotic. i started this? i defended myself before i was attacked? splain that to me lucy!!
sarge didnt merely mention that hed seen this post before. look at what he said. he said that they should give credit..CREDIT MIND U.. to another site that he believed was responsible for the material. he didnt investigate. he didnt apologize when he learned how wrong he was. did he? did i miss it? whats funny is how things work when u choose to see them from your ridiculously one sided perspective with blinders on and how u could be so absolutely so fucking stupid as to suggest that im the one responsible here for this barrage of harassment. holy cow!!
so if the jews didnt object to hitler killing them maybe he wouldnt have killed them quite so loudly or so many of them?
perhaps if u would stop posting on several different names the things u post would be less of nuisance.

By darth on Jul 7, 2012

  34. oh, darth! you HAD to go there? did you REALLY HAVE to prove Godwin’s Law yet again, by comparing YOUR situation here (which by the way is a non-physical situation) TO THE JEWS UNDER HITLER??????!!!!!!!!

now i AM starting to see the other side of this discussion. if you do honestly need to waste your own energy by continuing this pointless and inane “argument” (you’re arguing with no-one but yourself here.), if you choose such a path, well, i’ll just be further convinced that you have COMPLETELY made a Himalaya out of what others still see as a tiny molehill.

please remember BigO, this website we’re visiting.
    please remember discussing music.
please remember being loving and assuming best intent.

thanks, BigO, for all you do for all of us ungrateful bastards out here, and please keep up the great work!

  40. Profile of the Sociopath-some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths. Glibness and Superficial Charm
    Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
    Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”
    Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities.
Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

  41. i didnt compare myself or my situation to hitler. u need to read what i said again. my argument isnt pointless nor inane. u not getting it isnt my fault nor problem. its not my responsibility to keep u up to date or explain this all to u or make sure u understand it. no i dont argue with myself. thats not me using the sarge name and obviously im not using your name. im not arguing with u either.

and sarge.. if u want nothing to do with me.. then stop posting stupid comments that are obviously intended to mock me. i didnt start this with u. u started this with me. im just telling u to stop it. telling me that u dont want anything to do with me and u want me to leave u out of my hissy fits after u initiated your harassing mocking doesnt work towards that end. if u mean that..then dont fuck with me. thats not how u achieve that goal if its genuinely what u want.

  44. All the bitching aside… it’ just nice to have a Feat concert from the Lowell era. Yeah, it’s rough sounding — it could be better, but it’s better than nothing. Little Feat is still a great act to see these days. Catch them when you can.

By Roger on Jul 9, 2012

  45. starrwatts–i dont know who nancy is but u arent the only one posting here. and not all my comments are to u. i didnt say u were using different names. frankly i dont even know what youre talking about. if u dont like whats being said stop reading it. its not your place to tell anyone to give anything a rest.

roger - there are 459 feat shows on many of them are with lowell.

By darth on Jul 9, 2012

  46. btw.. 12-4-75 is an audience recording but absolutely superb sounding from tulsa ok one month earlier that is available on the archive site if u want something close to this date. and of course the halloween show from a month before that which is fm/sbd. then theres seattle from feb 8th 76. the next one after this thats available. thats audience too but superb quality. with so many high end recordings out there there is no real reason to struggle thru listening to something that isnt an easy listen. there really are a lot of lowell era feat tapes.
he died in mid 79. in 03 feat gave permission to post their stuff on the site.
the last one they have is 12-29-78 in ft worth tx. its 51mins. the earliest is 3-20-73. they have about 70 or so lowell items. figure they have a few dupes of a number of shows so id guess thats 40-45 lg shows.

  52. If it won’t offend anyone, I have a couple of suggested shows for those newbies searching for Lowell. One of my favorites is from a vinyl boot I have had forever called “Rampant SyncoPatio: Winterland 2/14/76″. Top notch recording and performance. I found an expanded version of a vinyl boot I love called “Electrif Lycanthrope”, my personal favorite, which was recorded at the WLIR radio studios in Hempstead, NY on 9/14/74. The expanded version also includes some WLIR stuff recorded on 4/10/73. Finally, there are excellent recordings from The Orpheum Theater, Boston [10-31-75] and Atlanta [5-23-75], which is a tour I was lucky enough to see 2 shows from, but not these. PS: In a recent meet-n-greet I had with the surviving band members, I asked about their opinions of tape sharing of the old shows. There unanimous response was that if oyu can find it and someone isn’t ripping you off to buy it, they hope you liked the show! Check out ‘Late Night Truck Stop’, an official band released live recording with Lowell. It sounds great!

By Johnny Kinkdom on Jul 14, 2012

  54. I can’t imagine anybody feeling slighted if they didn’t get credit for this dog. Sounds like a piss-quality FM broadcast, like a T-wire antenna where something better was required, or just plain too far from the source station. What I believe we’re hearing is as the signal fades, the taper adjusts slightly, always aware he’s taping something he wants to save.

That all said, there’s no knocking Little Feat’s live stuff!

  56. I was at this show…
One of the best performances by a great band.

I played frisbee with Ken Gradney on the Quad after their sound-check…not name-dropping, just to point out how cool and relaxed they were before this show, WHICH KILLED!
I remember that there were many UI Football team guys there, which surprised me.
I am SO VERY GLAD that some evidence of this truth still exists. This was a great one.
The Wolfgangs’ Vault version of “Rampant SyncoPatio” is a very close representation of the level of THIS show.
I feel honored to have ewxperienced this. A Apolitical Blues, what a way to start…(like Dylan starting with “Leopardskin Pillbox Hat)and just the sound of LGs slide on R&R Dr. They were something to behold!
