CARLA BLEY
Plays Christmas Carols [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Passionskirche, Berlin, Germany, December 4, 2008. Extracted from satellite broadcast. [However this MP3 version has been stepped down from its original 48kHz to 44KHz for audio CD conversion.]

OK… here’s one more for the road.

For those who are still in a festive mood, here’s an exquisite set that should brighten up anyone’s holidays and seems ideal for late night listening.

Because of Carla Bley’s long association with Charlie Haden, the opening O Tannenbaum sounds as if the Liberation Music Orchestra have taken an unexpected turn and are now tackling Christmas carols. Like a lot of the LMO’s music [which is probably due to Bley’s arrangements], the tracks are generally brass heavy though Silent Night And Day starts off with a simplicity that recalls Liz Story.
