FAN-TASTIC (The Faces)

August 14, 2012 – 4:30 am

IAN McLAGAN R.I.P. 1945-2014

It is with great sadness and eternal admiration that we report the passing of rock and roll icon Ian McLagan. [English keyboardist] Ian was a member of the Small Faces and Faces and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. He died today, December 3, 2014, surrounded by family and friends in his adopted hometown of Austin, TX, due to complications from a stroke suffered the previous day. He was 69 years old… Ian’s bandmate in Small Faces and Faces, Kenny Jones, said: “I am completely devastated by this shocking news and I know this goes for Ronnie and Rod also.” -

In Concert 1970 Compilation [no label, 2CD]

Mostly stereo mixing desk recordings and high quality audience recordings. Fan compilation by Stranger009. Great sound.

“My aim here was to collect the best quality performances from the 1970 shows by The Faces.

“Sound quality was important, as while there are some great audience recordings from this time, the mixing desk recordings and high quality audience recordings (for example San Francisco May 9, 1970) I’ve worked with here put those mostly firmly in the shade.

“For those who need to know the details I have described the work I carried out: both Miami and Boston 1970 had Rod’s voice firmly in the right channel, and through trial and error I found a way to correct that convincingly (have a listen to the end results).” - Stranger009

The artwork has all the text supplied by Stranger009 when he shared this at DIME. This was put together in the hope that Rod Stewart would reunite some day with the remaining Faces for a couple of gigs. It was shared in January of 2012 but the hoped for reunion of the band at this year’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Awards never materialized. Some fans have suggested the reason was because Stewart no longer can sing “rock” songs. In 2000, Stewart went for surgery for his thyroid cancer. Stewart then concentrated on singing standards and has released a number of volumes of Great American Songbook. He did step out to make one “rock” album, Still The Same… Great Rock Classics Of Our Time in 2006. None of the songs covered could be termed “rockers”.

Thanks then to Stranger009 for his efforts to capture this impressive band at the height of their powers.

  2. Definitely be checking this out.
The sound of the booze fueled Faces in concert is sadly missing from rock these days.
Wish you would have included “If I`m on the Late Side” but the setlists you put together look amazing, thanks!

  3. how about an audio of the video of that ‘final’ show in ‘75 where keith richards joined them in london. i had made this myself back in 1989 or 90 but it was on cassette and i no longer have this. it was a hell of a show as i recall and rather than forcing me to go looking for it id love to find it here. hint hint.
personally i like rods singing but i prefer it when beck is on guitar. those first 2 beck albums with rod on vocals are hot. sure isnt enough live material of that era. only one show i have ever seen from the reunion in 84. as i recall they did 8 shows before beck bowed out. i asked beck about it he said ego problems. rod continued on w/o him.
couple of years ago beck did a show in la at a tiny club and rod came out and sang 2 songs. theyre on youtube. of course people get ready was one. but theyre only audience recorded. not bad quality tho. there was a hint that they may try an album together but it never materialized. pity. rod has an xmas cd coming in mid october. i think it is horrible. ive heard a few of the songs already. but then i hate most xmas songs. i can listen to bowie and bing sing their duet tho. haha.

off topic - can anyone tell me at exactly what show it was that bowie had his heart attack on stage in 04? did the show stop at that point? anyone know? have there been any shows since? thank u.

By darth on Aug 14, 2012

  7. @darth this is the bowie show you’re thinking about isn’t it?

and this is what rolling stone has to say

By Rien on Aug 14, 2012

  8. @ Darth:
Would like to hear that final show too.
And thanks for the link. Ronnie L.(ane´)s last show I guess?
J Beck: It´s the J. B. Group with Stewart & Wood? All time favourite… Are any concerts of 84 available?

    By v kint on Aug 14, 2012

  9. The Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart reunion gave us a couple good sounding shows, albeit very limited Beck involvement. He was delegated to a handful of tunes in the middle of the sets and while there is no knocking Jeff`s ability these songs sound generic after all this time. What you really need are some of the better shows from the beginning of this band. There are incredible sounding BBC tracks and a few very decent sounding concerts, one in particular that is very good comes from Luannes [club] in texas, this originally floated around as a florida gig but someone found a first gen tape and understood it was from Luannes and released is probably the most “close to the band/album” sound of any shows out there.
I have literally tons of Jeff Beck and even though the quality on the early stuff varies greatly the passion in the play is stellar. You might want to also look for some of the shows that included Nicky Hopkins on piano , also great shows..Nicky chooses to play “You Make me Feel like a Natural woman” as an instrumental on a few dates, sounds great.
There are many Fillmore shows, exciting, one has Joe Cocker joining the boys, and there are some excellent european shows as well.
For a very good idea of just what shows are available , beg borrow or steal a copy of Christopher Hjort and Doug Hinman`s excellent book “Jeff`s Book”. A chronology of Jeff`s career from 1965 -1980 which lists the then known available recorded shows.
On a side note, I also love Truth and Beckola , so much in fact that a very good friend put together a live representation of each disc for me featuring some of the only known performances of every song from the he created a wonderful booklet to go with each. This is one of the most treasured parts of my Jeff Beck collection.

By sluggo on Aug 14, 2012

  10. @Darth There are quite a few live recordings of that Jeff Beck Group around. Here is an example from the Fillmore in 1968

  11. @Sluggo - Here is a link to Luannes,%201968%20Luanne%27s.%20Dallas,%20TX/

By JB on Aug 14, 2012

  12. Sluggo….I got a copy of that live representation too from the same source….it is great. How are you? A few years ago we emailed each other regarding some Beatles Alternate albums….I think I mailed you them. Anyway, keep the faith.

By JB on Aug 14, 2012

  13. Doin` fine JB and I recall the Beatles alts and as a matter of fact I was listening just last night to my favourite, the Mag/mys/tour alt!

BIG O should consider making some Jeff Beck Group BBC tracks available, there are some good ones.

By sluggo on Aug 14, 2012

  14. That Mag Mystery Tour is fantastic. Since you reminded me will listen to that today. There are some great BBC Beck shows….I have one. Here is a link to get info / cover for the Luannes show.

By JB on Aug 14, 2012

  15. Folks JB has given you a link to the Luannes show which is probably the best sounding concert of the Jeff Beck Group from that era.If you don`t have it and are a fan GET IT !

By sluggo on Aug 14, 2012

  16. Why thank you, Sluggo! The pleasure was mine.

By Just Bill on Aug 15, 2012

  17. On Rod Stewart´s “Absolutely Live”, I remember JB played Rock My Plimsoul (82?). Great band he (R.S.) had. Great concerts these years. Even in the rain… :-)
Will look to these 84´s… and search my JBGs for N Hopkins. Thanks!
JB “did” America in 68, Led Zep took the prize. As it had been with the Yardbirds - Beck´s the guy who blows it up - to the top, to the early end?
Anyway, this is about The Faces.
    “It´s just a thought”, at a day´s end.

    don`t think so.

  19. of the reunion tour in 84.. there were only 8 shows and the only one i have found was tacoma dome in seattle 7-8-84. i dont know of any other recordings. i guess there could be others. i just havent found them.
i am familiar with the variety of shows from 68 and 69 of the two of them together. i have quite a collection of these. i have been a fan of both men since i was in 5th or 6th grade. im sorry if i wasnt clear. thank u for those who tried to help.

and rien.. i havent checked it out yet but thank u in advance for your efforts in helping me with that information.

By darth on Aug 15, 2012

  20. he does rock my plimsoul live with rod at that 84 show i mentioned. heres a link to a youtube audio clip of it -

there are a bunch of other songs done this way from the same show. this isnt that rare of a recording.

By darth on Aug 15, 2012

  21. ok just for y’all and for those who cant do this stuff on your own.. heres a link for the entire show -

its 18 tracks. a 3rd of them with beck. its 87mins so if u convert it to audio it wont fit on a cd. u will have to slice it up with a program like hjsplit and take the last 2 songs off and put them on a 2nd cd. thats what i do anyway.
actually id just get this somewhere else and not go thru the trouble but for those who just want it now. here u go. enjoy.

By darth on Aug 15, 2012

  22. no need to monkey around with the youtube conversion crap the link for Ready Made Guys is here..depositfiles works well. flac or mp3

  24. I believe the Miami show (Tracks 1-9) is from Pirate’s World in Miami on 7/23/71. On their 1970 tour, The Faces played in Edmonton, Alberta and Vancouver, BC on 10/31/70 and 11/1/70 and Madison Wisconsin on 11/3/70. It is unlikely that they played Florida in between. I think their first time in Miami was 7/23/71. I have these same 9 songs under that date from another source and they appear to be some sort of soundboard. The Boston Tea Party songs are from an recording from 3/27/70. The others appear to be accurate except I’m unfamiliar with Low Down & Dirty and have never seen it on a Faces set list. All 4 days of the Fillmore West shows were recorded by audience members. Pineapple & Monkey was played on the 7th, 8th & 10th.

By Mike Cummings on Aug 16, 2012

  25. Thanks to the stranger009, to BigO and to Mike Cummings. Source I have for the Miami-Pirate”s World show has the date as Feb. 11, 1970, but that could have been a reversal of the international date by the packager. I attended the Madison show on 11/3/70 while in college and it was a ripper! Became a life long fan from that show. Even got a sip of Ronnie Lane’s Mateus bottle. Great, great band in it’s original form. Get the box for a comprehensive set.

  26. here`s a link to rod and jeff doing, “people get ready” and “I ain`t superstitious”.!

By sluggo on Aug 16, 2012

  27. there are ppl who say there are recordings of jimi and eric too. there arent. as i said about the rod and beck 84 tour recordings. there is the one. there are no others. even when ppl say there are. there is only the one. its a good one. and im sure most ppl are happy with it. there are other rod 84 recordings including an fm brdcst later on during the tour but beck was long gone by then.

yes the el ray th in la ca 4-21-09 above is the clip i was referring to. ive mentioned this clip previously 3-4x on here. i think the last time was on the curtis mayfield posting. its a keeper. it was the first time they were on stage in 25 years. jeff did a 2nd nite on the 22nd but rod didnt join him.

  28. I`m not going to take the bait Darth, i have no interest in getting into a pissing match with you.
This is BIG 0 `s site.

By sluggo on Aug 16, 2012

  29. go ahead take the bait , darth wants you to know he personally frisked every concert goer at those 8 shows and found no recorders.
He knows everything, don`t you know that?

By judge juhdee on Aug 17, 2012

  30. “This is BIG 0 `s site.”

not if u are the entity known as darth

By barth on Aug 17, 2012

  31. its not a pissing match. ill be the first one to admit im wrong when proven to be. ive searched for most of (but not all) the last 28 years for those recordings. i had that one that there is nearly immediately after it happened on cassette. first in audience average quality. then improved far superior quality then the one thats circulating now. i dont believe its fm as is claimed. i dont know what the source is. i think its a feed from either the sbd or an ald. its not a pre fm either. the most likely explanation is just a sbd recording.

some ppl out there might not know that rod nearly was part of the arms concerts in late 83 but 5-6 of the other musicians threatened to walk off if he joined the cast. the arms shows are what inspired the forming of the firm and brought page clapton and beck to the stage together. amazing shows they were.

By darth on Aug 17, 2012

  32. I have:
    Vancouver July 11, 1984

Tacoma Dome July 8, 1984 (FM broadcast and Jeff is definitely there, Rod introduces him and he speaks)

I know for sure there is a Reno, but I don’t own it.

    Pretty sure there are others.

By Just Bill on Aug 17, 2012

  33. its not a pissing match. ill be the first one to admit im wrong when proven to be. ive searched for most of (but not all) the last 28 years for those recordings.

guess you just didn`t look in the right places .
But according to you if you don`t have it , it doesn`t exist.LOLOLOLOL

By judge juhdee on Aug 17, 2012

  34. For what its worth, I have a show from 7/8/84 Tacoma Dome in Seattle that features Jeff Beck on 6 tunes. It purports to be, and sounds like an FM broadcast. I do note that one of the Rod Stewart sites lists his various tour dates with and without the Faces, states the 7/8/84 show was in Portland, OR. So who really knows.

By Mike Cummings on Aug 17, 2012

  35. JB and Sluggo, thanks for the Luanne’s link, that show really smokes!

    By Mark E on Aug 19, 2012

  36. the tacoma dome is the one we are talking about. thats the one that exists. yes.
as i mentioned i dont believe its an fm brdcst.
it doesnt sound like an fm brdcst and yes it says it is. it was never broadcast on any radio station. and if u listen to it u can tell it isnt one.

bill - if u have vancouver and it is actually different from seattle that would surely be wonderful. how good is the quality? i will have to do some searching and see if i can find that now that u say it is out there. wish me luck. with a location and date i should be able to find this.

to the idiot - i dont say that if i dont have it it doesnt exist. i have never said such a thing. thats a false quote. i guess u know this or u wouldnt follow it up with a bunch of stupid lol’s. doesnt one lol suffice? after all what does laughing out loud out loud out loud out loud mean?

By darth on Aug 20, 2012

  37. ok from what i can best find thanks to bill.. since he gave a city and date..there were 2 songs on that vancouver show where beck joined rod - “Rock My Plimsoul” and “I Ain’t Superstitious”. sigh. i found someone who has them. he posted his collection on a site without a way to contact him. ugh. found many references to the show and the fact that only 2 songs were done with beck joining him. well we knew that beck did approx 8 shows before he had enough. i surely dont want the full show but i am iso them 2 songs. so my search is on.
if anyone is interested in them if and when i find them.. feel free to contact me. ill share them of course. im like that u know.

  39. Faces live at The Marquee Club 1970. Filmed for German TV in December, the production is pro in every way. With a film crew on stage and shooting a matter of inches from Rod Stewart’s pretty face, you get a perspective on the lead singer formerly only seen by his dentist. For a Brit, his pearly whites are in extraordinarily good shape. A shame it’s only 28 minutes!

    The set list:
    You’re My Girl
    Too Much Woman
    Maybe I’m Amazed
    Gasoline Alley
    Around The Plynth

Ron Wood - guitar, Kenny Jones - drums, Ronnie Lane - bass guitar, Ian McLagen - keyboards.

  40. I saw the Faces in late 1969 when they played at our teen club dance on Alconbury Air Force Base to maybe 35 of us. My friends and I helped carry their equipment on stage.
I searched a website tonight for their tour schedule from that time and found an entry where they played “in Cambridgeshire, U.S. Air Force Base” and that all it says. But it is the only thing ever on their schedule that had any reference to an Air Force base (or any other military base). And Alconbury is close to Cambridge so this had to be it.
I was 14 and we didn’t even know who these guys were. The singer (who turned out to be Rod Stewart) asked us if we knew where he could get something to drink before the show. There was an Airman’s Club right next door so we took him over there and he got hooked up with a GI coming out who went back in the package store and he came back with a pint of whiskey. He downed it before going on stage. I remember hearing his raspy voice and thinking “This guy has a cold and needs a night off”.
I also remember Ronnie Lane had Donald Duck cartoon bell bottoms on. Great show as I recall. Thought nothing more about them until a couple of months later, they showed up on Top of The Pops - the British version of American Bandstand - and telling my sister that was the band that had played at our dance.
Then they went on tour in the states and the rest is history.
I have told the story to friends but it was cool to actually find the reference to the schedule when they played there. The power of the internet…
